Position Purpose

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Prescriber (Psych NP) for the Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic provides competent, patient-centered, best-practice and evidence-based psychiatry care in coordination with other behavioral health and wellness clinic staff and medical center staff. This position is Milwaukee- based and includes providing in person care to patients in Milwaukee as well as leading the expansion efforts and providing services to patients in other ARCW locations via telehealth videoconferencing technology. Position includes some occasional travel.

The Psych NP reports directly to the Psychiatry Program Manager and Clinical Supervisor of the Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic. The Psych NP is responsible, in conjunction with other departmental staff, for the service development and delivery, quality and integration of psychiatry services into ARCW Medical Centers.

The primary purpose of this position is to assure the capacity of the Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic to deliver needed psychiatry services that are of high quality to a diverse array of patients in a variety of locations.

Scope of Responsibilities

The AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) is one of the nation’s largest providers of HIV prevention, care and treatment services with a budget approaching $120 million and employing nearly 300 professionals. Our organization also includes both St. Louis Effort for AIDS (EFA) and Denver's Rocky Mountain CARES (RMC).

The unique, nationally recognized ARCW HIV Medical Home model of care assures that everyone with HIV has access to medical, dental, mental health and social services and provides the best opportunity for patients to achieve high quality health outcomes. ARCW also provides aggressive HIV prevention services to gay men, injection drug users and others at the highest risk for HIV infection.

ARCW operates in the states of WI, CO and MO. It embraces a Market Culture to increase access to care, enhance quality outcomes and achieve and surpass financial performance expectations and has an aggressive plan to expand into additional states.

Position Responsibilities
  • Adhere to Federal, State, and local government regulations while assuring compliance with all ARCW service delivery standards.This includes complying with the ARCW Health Care Corporate Compliance Standards of Conduct and policies and procedures of the Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic.
  • Accept referrals (psychiatric intake/evaluation, medication management, and on-going psychiatry/psychotherapy) from medical and behavioral health and wellness clinic staff giving priority to urgent, complex, and uninsured patients.
  • Conduct psychiatric assessment and evaluation (intakes), render a DSM appropriate diagnosis /es, prescribe medication, assess and evaluate medication management, and provide follow-up care for patients.
  • Adhere to appointment-based service delivery and productivity expectations for diagnostic assessment and evaluation as well as ongoing pharmacologic and care management.
  • Provide patient education using epocrates.com (or another type of pharmacological resource) and document informed consent for all prescribed medications.
  • Participate and provide consultation generally on crisis intervention, differential diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and specifically on patient cases, among other things, in two types of staffing:(a) medical clinic staffing or care conferences; and, (b) departmental group clinical collaboration meetings.
  • Participate in the state-wide development of the psychiatric services program including telehealth, and deliver services via a telephonic (or web-based) modality.
  • Make appropriate referrals for crisis stabilization, crisis intervention, chemical dependency, and/or AODA issues, and facilitate admission to treatment facilities.
  • Utilize the harm reduction model in the delivery of psychiatry services.
  • Prepare accurate and timely records on each patient, utilizing the electronic health record (EHR) while ensuring that all necessary information, documents, and evaluations are in the official patient record. This includes tending to the financial/billing tasks of providing patient care in the EHR. Involvement in quality initiatives is required.
  • Work in collaboration with other psychiatric providers as well as the Case Manager of the Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic and be available as back-up and for contact between hours when patient need dictates care.
  • Keep abreast of the changing developments in the treatment of HIV and mental health/substance use conditions as well as maintaining a sound knowledge base on the interactions between psychotropic and HIV medications.
  • Regularly report to the Psychiatry Program Manager and Clinical Supervisor as well as the Director of the Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic on assigned responsibilities, maintaining an open channel of communication, sharing all appropriate and necessary information, and participating in departmental staff meetings, group supervision sessions, and/or continuing education events/trainings when requested.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Director.


  • Required Qualifications

    Adhere to the Code of Ethics of one’s chosen profession.

    DNP with Psychiatric Specialty, State of Wisconsin licensure and DEA licensure (to handle and prescribe controlled substances). Willingness to obtain licensure in Colorado and Missouri.

    Provider status approval letter by the Department of Health Services DQA

    Thorough knowledge of behavioral health and wellness practice standards, specifically psychiatry.

    Experience in providing psychiatric and psychotherapy services.

    Knowledge of and sensitivity to the HIV/AIDS population.

    An understanding that as a provider in the Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic, you serve as one member of team offering services statewide and that you may need to provide services (e.g. in another clinic location, at a satellite site) or participate in clinic functions on an interim or periodic basis (e.g. covering vacant positions, attending staff and/or clinical supervision meetings, participating in trainings) extending beyond your primary location of hire.

    Satisfactory Caregiver and Criminal Background Checks.

    Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Five years or greater experience in providing behavioral health and wellness services, especially psychiatry services.
    Demonstrated commitment to cultural sensitivity and cultural accountability.

    Understanding of a variety of best-practices and evidenced-based practices specifically in psychiatry, and more generally in behavioral health and wellness.

    Knowledge of and sensitivity to the HIV/AIDS patient population.
