About Urban Ventures

Urban Ventures is a faith-based nonprofit organization breaking the cycle of poverty by educating kids, strengthening their families, and building a healthy community. We partner with families in some the most under-resourced neighborhoods of south Minneapolis with one overarching goal –to send every youth to college or some form of post-secondary education.

Major Responsibility

The human resource generalist performs duties at the professional level in some or all of the following functional areas: employee relations, training, employment, affirmative action and employment equity program, benefits management, and payroll functions. This position requires an extremely perceptive person who is capable of performing daily operational tasks as well as being able to look at the big picture. He/She will be able to relate effectively and professionally to individuals at all levels within the organization. The generalist must be sensitive to corporate needs, employee goodwill and the business needs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Manages biweekly payroll – previews time cards, verifies earnings and deductions, oversees PTO accrual, and ensures time cards are approved in a timely manner
  • Updates Shared Services payroll information for invoicing
  • Completes HSA transfers
  • Manages HRIS (human resource information system)
  • Maintains employee personnel files in compliance with law
  • Coordinates the annual benefit renewal process with employees
  • Verifies benefit billing accuracy and processes for payment
  • Reviews benefits with employees and processes enrollment, cancellation or changes
  • Facilitates COBRA for all eligible participants
  • Oversees worker compensation claims
  • Coordinates FMLA and short-term disability paperwork
  • Represents the organization for any unemployment claims
  • Assists with hiring of all personnel, interns, temporary employees, and contractors, – posts jobs, writes job descriptions, reviews applications, interviews candidates, performs reference/background/credit report checks, prepares offer letters, on-boards new employees
  • Ensures compliance with USCIS Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification
  • Manages all employee disciplinary action
  • Handles employee separations and exit interviews
  • Maintains, updates and distributes the employee phone list and org chart
  • Coordinates/assists with training and organizational development
  • Drafts, updates and implements personnel policies and procedures
  • Responds to employee relation issues
  • Works closely with the CEO to address grievances brought against the organization
  • Maintains and coordinates employee recognition programs
  • Assists with miscellaneous accounting functions such as accounts payable and/or accounts receivable
  • Assists with the internship program
  • Completes other miscellaneous projects are requested

Qualifications & Experience

  • Four-year degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in HR or related field
  • SHRM-CP certification preferred
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Strong skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Maintain highest level of confidentiality
  • Experience with payroll administration
  • Excellent influencing and organizational development skills
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to multi-task and problem solve with a diverse workforce
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector a plus
  • A team player who can relate to peers and associates, operating effectively in a collegial, yet fast-paced and sometimes demanding, work environment

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $22.00 to $25.00 /hour
