Through the utilization of applied theories, principles and practices of clinical laboratory technology, the Medical Lab Technician accurately performs and reports a wide range of routine and complex analyses in all sections of the clinical laboratory in order to provide data which will assist the physician in diagnosis and treatment. Develops and conducts research into new technologies, writes and updates procedures as needed. Trains other personnel.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Receives and prepares lab specimens for assay, using established technologies and methods. According to area / department assigned, may do one or more of the following:
Isolates microorganisms from a variety of clinical specimens, using specialized morphologic biochemical and automated methods, with emphasis on rapid detection of pathogenic organisms. Performs susceptibility testing to determine appropriate treatment.
Performs serologic testing in order to obtain data used in diagnosis and treatment of disease and to provide a safe transfusion of blood components. Draws and processes blood into its components. Performs therapeutic phlebotomies to aid in treatment of disease.
Performs automated and manual assays on a variety of clinical specimens to aid in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Correlates test results, reports results accurately and reports STATS, criticals or abnormals according to established procedures.
Performs and evaluates quality control and quality assurance procedures as outlined in policy manuals in order to ensure accurate and appropriate test results and service.
Performs linearity, validation and calibration studies on instruments and equipment to ensure accuracy of reported results in addition to preventative maintenance and troubleshooting as indicated.
Researches new technologies and participates in audits necessary for advancements in technology and / or quality assurance.
Participates in proficiency testing and maintains competency associated with the profession of Medical Technology.
Writes and revises Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) in compliance with NCCLS requirements.
Establishes priorities in the work setting, providing for optimal patient outcome.
Follows confidentiality protocols.
Provides supervisory leadership within the department as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Associate’s Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college / university and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited MLT program OR CLA certification and an Associate Degree or at least 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college / university, including 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology OR an Associate Degree or at least 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college / university including 6 semester hours of biology AND successful completion of a 50 week U.S. Military medical laboratory training course OR three years full time clinical experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology and Clinical Microscopy. At least two years must be under the supervision of an appropriately certified medical scientist and a certified medical technologist.
Has passed an MLT (ASCP) or CLT (NCA) level certification examination offered by one of the professional societies. Note for New Hire Non-Certified MLT: Must be eligible to sit for ASCP and / or NCA certification exam and must successfully pass within one year of hire.
Work requires analytical ability to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses and summarizing the information and data in order to interpret and report results.
Must possess sufficient motor skills in order to perform delicate tasks such as calibration and maintenance of laboratory instruments, perform precise sample procedures, pipetting of samples and use of computer workstations.
Must possess sufficient communication skills (direct telephone) to interact with patients and other members of the health care team. Possesses hearing acuity so as to be able to communicate with others, communicate using the telephone and be able to monitor the many sounds produced by clinical instrumentation.
Possesses color vision.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires constant physical movements on a regular basis OR requires standing in the same position over long periods of time OR eye or ear strain as in constant reading, CRT usage OR frequent lifting of moderately heavy items (i.e. 20 lbs or greater) OR frequent bending.
Requires working in an environment with potentially infectious materials (HIV, Hepatitis, and T.B.) and toxic or irritating chemicals. May be exposed to noise and temperature variations. (This includes possible sensitization to latex from prolonged wearing of gloves.)
Some irregularity in scheduled hours because of overtime requirements, including weekend rotation OR occasional stress due to periodic or cyclical workload pressures. Stress may be encountered on a daily basis. Scheduled hours may vary depending on the needs of the laboratory.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Clinical Manager of relevant department / section.
