With over 30 years of service, South Jersey Against AIDS remains the only AIDS Service Organization in southeastern New Jersey; a region of 1,500 square miles with over a million residents comprised by Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Camden counties (Including three state prisons housing over 7,900 inmates).

Responsibilities and Duties
ARCH (Access to Reproductive Care & HIV Services) nurses (RNs or APNs) provide women and men with nursing care, education, disease screening, counseling, and as appropriate, pregnancy screening and referrals for pre- and inter-conception, prenatal, and obstetrical care for women of reproductive age who inject drugs, are the partners of others who inject drugs, or themselves use other drugs. ARCH nurses also establish and manage a vaccine program for adult immunizations including hepatitis, TDAP, HPV. ARCH nurses also provide drug treatment assessment and referral, overdose prevention education and distribute Narcan.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care, education and outreach to clients.
- Create and monitor local referral system for prenatal and obstetrical care.
- Provide preconception counseling and care to clients of reproductive age.
- Provide education and risk reduction counseling about prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission.
- Provide education and referrals for wound management.
- Provide drug treatment assessment and referral for drug treatment.
- Educate clients on safer injection practices.
- Participate in ongoing overdose prevention efforts including administration of agents to prevent overdose, and distribute Narcan to heroin users and their families.
- Administer vaccines
- Establish and manage distribution of adult immunizations (e.g., hepatitis, TDAP, HPV) to clients according to State storage protocols and monitoring requirements.
- Maintain client medical records and vaccine record-keeping system.
- Conduct point-of-care testing
- Conduct point-of-care pregnancy testing; counsels and refers clients according to result.
- Perform rapid HIV and Hepatitis C testing, counseling clients on results and linking clients to healthcare providers who can manage active infection(s). Reports results to appropriate health department or New Jersey Department of Health (DOH).
- Collect specimens for laboratory testing
- Draw blood for syphilis and Hepatitis B screening.
- Collect urine for STD Chlamydia and Gonorrhea urethral screening
- Obtain swab specimens for pharyngeal and rectal screening after instructing clients on self-collection techniques.
- Data collection and documentation
- Document client encounters, interventions, and referrals as required for records and reporting system developed in collaboration with DOH and Rutgers, François-Xavier Bagnoud Center (FXB).
- Maintain an appropriate medical record for all patients as required by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
- Ensure medical oversight by a physician as required by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners and the New Jersey Board of Nursing for all nurses.
- Utilize standing orders for all immunizations and laboratory testing by a physician with an active license from the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners and malpractice coverage.
- Continuing Education and Professional Development
- Attend professional conferences, seminars, and workshops to maintain a strong, current level of knowledge and expertise in health care of women, people who inject drugs (PWID), and harm reduction principles.
- Review professional literature and research findings, to remain current with best practices in health care of women, care for PWID, and harm reduction.
- Maintain membership and actively participates in professional organizations, as appropriate.

- Attend all orientation, ongoing trainings, and meetings organized by their agency, FXB Center, the DOH’s technical assistance partner for this project.
- Attend meetings of the Statewide Family-Centered HIV Care Network.
Education/Experience:
ARCH nurse will have a minimum of an RN degree from an accredited college or university. ARCH nurse must have Phlebotomy or IV certification and a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
ARCH nurse will possess strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent presentation skills. A working knowledge of HIV/AIDS and related issues is helpful.
Complete on-going state-approved training's as assigned.
