Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Reporting Structure:
Position reports to Extrusion Engineering Supervisor– Corning Optical Fiber and Cables (OFC)

Role Purpose: Drive improvements to materials specification/introductions to ensure more cost effective business and standardized engineering processes. Evaluate the impact of material specification changes to product, process and equipment performance and quality architectures.

Lead/assist engineering departments in material qualifications and product validation for product and new material (or supplier) design changes. • Identify and pursue cost reduction opportunities through material changes.
Leverage material specification knowledge to introduce alternate material technology to plant production.
Lead/assist in authoring plant’s material improvement qualification plans (globally).
Lead/assist in developing and executing material/process improvement and cost reduction projects to improve cable making efficiency and cost.
Identify key initiatives for regional improvement and ascertain how support can be provided to assist regions in progressing toward achieving them.
Direct the globalization of materials specification for cable operations. Replicate, implement and standardize best-in-class processes for cable operations.
Ensure quality issues resulting from material performance are address through improvement projects and material change. Product Quality Architecture should be updated as necessary.
Facilitate and leverage available resource skill-sets from around the world, including Technology, Quality, and Division Engineering groups.
Ability to work across various functional groups on a daily basis to accomplish goals.

Key Responsibilities:
Lead regional or worldwide materials projects in order to increase capability, achieve improved consistency, or achieve material cost reduction with similar or increased product quality.
Assess potential material changes Quality Architectures/PQA implications.
Drives early identification of material specification changes, assesses other department’s engagement requirements and ensures implementation of actions to ensure Cost Reduction improvement.
Interfaces with Technology Materials team, Division Engineering ORM team and Manufacturing to understand all Raw Material Specifications and roadmap substitution and alternate materials projects.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
40 hrs: additional hours/weekends when needed to support project work/ quality issue resolution.

Travel Requirements: 10%+

Required:
Bachelor of Materials Science, Polymer Engineering and Science, or equivalent technical degree.
5-7 years of relevant experience.
Process or Materials engineering background.
Experience leading teams in meeting continuous improvement goals & making step change process improvements.
Demonstrates the ability to analyze and evaluate material performance from a capability, process, quality, technical, and/or cost standpoint to develop plans and strategies.
Communicates effectively; coordinates and aligns activities where required.

Desired:
Master’s Degree Preferred.
Exhibits sound decision making skills and exercises good judgment is able to effectively analysis and simplifies data from multiple sources and set direction as required.
Demonstrates active leadership in ability to establish direction, challenging goals and clear expectations to achieve results.
