The Development and Alumni Relations Division is looking for a highly skilled, organized and detail-oriented writing professional to craft correspondence for the president of Rice University, primarily in the form of gift acknowledgements, but also including condolences, congratulations and other types of correspondence as needed. The Development Writer also works collaboratively with a team of writers, communications professionals and fundraising staff to develop persuasive case prospectuses and proposals, interview stakeholders and donors, write compelling stories and marketing content, and complete other communication projects as time allows. Finally, the Development Writer will serve as a point person for creative decisions on select assignments, which may include leading brainstorming sessions with division partners, pitching concepts, organizing planning sessions and working collaboratively on strategy and goals.
Education Required Bachelor's Degree
English, liberal arts, journalism, or a related field.

- Three or more years of professional writing and editing experience
- Experience writing for development at an institution of higher education or in writing proposals, brochures, correspondence, grants or newsletters for various purposes
- Experience working with clients and managing customer relationships with faculty, deans, and fundraisers
- Experience working in a nonprofit fundraising campaign or initiative
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of multiple media formats
- Knowledge of AP style
- Listening skills
- Microsoft Office skills
- Experience in a PC Windows environment
Internal / External Contacts
Frequent contact with university staff, faculty, and administrators at all levels.
This position requires contact with people outside the university, including work with Rice volunteers, donors, and outside vendors etc.
Work long hours in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
Will spend many hours per day using a computer, in strategy meetings, and meeting with others on collaborative projects.
