Legal Assistant (Office of the General Counsel)

The Money Source Inc. is seeking a Legal Assistant to work within the General Counsel’s Office in our Melville, New York location.

Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Legal Assistant will assist with all phases of the litigation process for the company, with job responsibilities that include but are not limited to case calendaring, preparation, progress, management, strategy, discovery and filings. The preferred candidate will have experience working for senior counsel and/or partners within a reputable law firm.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform initial case assessments and file preparation, including but not limited collecting all internal documentation and any relevant information from a variety of sources.

Conduct internal interviews for case investigations and preparation.

Maintain litigation calendar, log all pertinent information, and conduct relevant legal research under the direction of corporate counsel.

Develop and manage document databases and case management software.

Aid attorneys with deposition preparation, interrogatories and other discovery requests; maintain pleadings and discovery indexes.

Organize high volume exhibits with documents, appendices and other evidence, for legal briefs, memos, and case pleadings.

Respond to and gather all applicable information for subpoenas while keeping a log of all responses and generate correspondence.

Perform administrative duties such as scheduling calendar hearings and deadlines, organize case files and manage logistics.

Work with outside counsel on litigation matters as well as keep track of time for each case, tasks performed thereto, and appropriately assess and maintain system for invoices/billing.

Experience and Skills:

Eligible candidates for consideration should possess at minimum 3 years of relevant litigation experience within a reputable law firm or law office. Law firm case management experience and working directly for one or more senior attorneys in a commercial litigation context or litigation group is also required. In-house corporate legal department and/or financial services/mortgage banking experience is a plus.

Candidate must be able to conduct e-filings in state and federal courts in New York, and other jurisdictions where needed.

Candidate should be familiar with legal research software in either LexisNexis or Westlaw, and PACER search protocols.

Displays excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, and possesses the ability to successfully troubleshoot issues, alongside the capability to multitask, properly prioritize and consistently deliver superior work product.

Strong sense of accountability and attention to detail, taking ownership over projects and responsibilities, and helping resolve issues proactively would be desired and expected.

Strong computer and phone skills required, most notably demonstrating a strong ability to research using internet resources, as well as a proven proficiency utilizing Excel and Word programs.

Maintains strict confidentiality in all aspects of the General Counsel’s office, and any communications and/or information thereto concerning company customers, its employees, management, clients, vendors, and the like.

Candidate hired in this position will report directly to the General Counsel.
