About the Opportunity
The Breakthrough Approach helps district partners to achieve and sustain new levels of performance in their schools by focusing on an iterative cycle of change allowing districts to see results in just 10 weeks. The Approach empowers teachers, school leaders and district staff to create measurable performance goals tied to key organizational challenges like attendance, instructional, operations, etc. This rapid cycle of learning through doing coupled with the autonomy and empowerment provided the sponsoring district-level senior leadership team allows the Breakthrough teams to cut through red tape to see results -fast. Each team is tasked with taking on a specific challenge to improve their school’s performance in an area that directly aligned with a districtwide strategic priority. Teams collaborated to innovate and test ideas, attacking their specific challenges with urgency and focus. They continuously measured their results, pivoting when necessary to achieve their goals within the short 10-week period. Throughout the process, DMGroup consultants and performance coaches supported teams by helping them with just-in-time professional development and coaching. The Breakthrough Approach works because we are able to:
- Deconstruct ambitious strategic priorities and objectives into small-scale, specific stretch goals that address important challenges
- Empower field teams to take ownership and solve goals by being innovative, adaptive, and relentless in their pursuit of success during a short cycle
- Scale momentum generated throughout the Breakthrough process by sharing insights broadly and by supporting broader participation
As a Performance Coach you’ll work with five teams, consisting of 5-7 members to breakdown the psychological barriers to change while supporting teams in their thinking and learnings throughout this iterative cycle of experimentation and implementation. Throughout the 10 week cycle you’ll be responsible for providing individual and team coaching, as well as offering real-time, practical professional development grounded in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
What You’ll Do
The Performance Coach will be responsible for the following in addition to any other project as assigned by their manager:
- Maximize the Breakthrough Team’s collaboration and efficiency by working with the team/school leadership to:
- Develop the weekly meeting design, facilitation practice, agenda creation, etc. and manage debriefs;
- Translate the team goals into actionable priorities and work streams for execution while observe discrepancies in a team or project’s growth process, realigning team members and practices with stated objectives (as needed);
- Discuss action steps to move forward, realigning on strategy moving forward in pursuit of goal (as needed);
- Support identification of high-level team trends and potential solutions;
- Guide team in determining corrective action to obtain performance results and
- Openly listen and observe client capacity to recommend effective solutions.
- Collaborate with DM group staff and performance coaches to leverage and refine best practices in leadership and performance coaching, support, and development
- Support teacher and school level data analysis to identify realistic, ambitious, and measurable objectives
- Support teacher and school leadership with change management best practices to realize quick wins and larger successes.
Who You Are
- You are a skilled project manager and communicator. You love the challenge of synthesizing and executing big picture ideas and have strong strategic thinking and project execution abilities. You’re able to take the team’s detailed problem statement and break it down meticulously to ensure timely and accurate implementation. Your attention to detail and ability to thoughtfully prioritize allows you to share just the right level of relevant information with both internal and external colleagues to keep the team’s key priorities on track.
- You are an effective communicator. You have a facilitative and collaborative approach to with a proven track record of coaching teachers, school leaders, and/ or teams to success. You communicate clearly to help audiences move from ideas to action when necessary.
- You are a self-starter and get stuff done. Your experience, transparency, and organization allow you to get the nuts and bolts in place in record time, always with support and input from the rest of the organization. You are able to work independently with some guidance from your manager.
- You bring people together and are an engaging coach and trainer. You know how to build buy-in from a variety of stakeholders, ensuring they have shared ownership over decisions and deliverables. You have time-tested strategies in your toolkit to support effective decision-making processes and have developed proven internal management systems that drive consistent results. You have extensive experience coaching leaders to achieve success and perform at high levels despite increasingly challenging barriers. Your instincts are creative and help you handle ambiguous situations with ease and with limited guidance.

- A bachelor’s degree with at least 10 years of work experience; at least three years of experience in complex project management and performance or executive coaching.
- Experience working with and through senior level executives, preferably in a school-based setting.
- Experienced in cross-functional team leadership with the ability to quickly and efficiently translate ideas into trackable, actionable plans.
Time Commitment & Compensation
- New Performance Coaches will take on no more than 5 Breakthrough Teams, ideally within a single district location. Within each Breakthrough Team, you will have between 5-7 team members. Across the 10 week commitment coaches should expect to spend approximately 40 hours between coaching, preparation efforts and follow up activities across their 5 teams.
- For each team you support you’ll receive a flat fee of $3,000. While new coaches will support no more than 5 teams, experienced coaches will support between 5 and 7 teams, likely across several district partners.
- DMGroup hosts a fall and spring Breakthrough cohorts. Successful coaches are often invited back to support cohorts in the following season.
