Feline research: where have we come from and where are we going?
Cats are traditionally underappreciated in scientific study, yet genetically cats are closest mammals to humans, outside primates. Cats share our genes (over 90%), our diseases, and our drugs. At Basepaws we’ve invested in research will improve our understanding of the diseases and health conditions that impact cats, and teach us how to better diagnose, treat, care for and even cure these threats to our beloved feline companions. With the help of consumer interest, DNA sequencing and machine learning, can study feline DNA unlock a better understanding of naturally occurring disease in pets and people?
The Chief Veterinary Officer Role:
We are seeking a feline-focused part-time Veterinarian who has balanced academic and clinical experience to help us advance our genetic model database for further study as it relates to overall feline medicine and diseases. Our feline database will help pet owners, veterinarians, breeders, rescue organizations, and pet food companies understand the link between a pet’s DNA and its traits, nutritional needs, and likelihood for common disorders and diseases.
