Volunteers of America provides community-based housing to the most vulnerable homeless individuals in Spokane County and helps them on the path to stability, physical well-being, and self-sufficiency. Our Security Team ensures safe, secure, and supportive environment for all Volunteers of America housing locations and residents.

In order to qualify, you must be at least 21 years of age (due to specific requirements of this position) and need to be able to pass Washington State Patrol WATCH background check and a Driving Record check.

You also must possess the following Qualifications,Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License and proof of Auto Insurance coverage
  • A minimum of 2 years of related experience: working with individuals in crisis who are low-income, homeless, mentally ill and affected by substance abuse and/or Security work
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to establish rapport
  • Ability to motivate others towards achieving goals
  • Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus
  • Task-oriented, non-judgmental, and with clear sense of boundaries
  • Ability to work in a variety of settings with culturally-diverse populations
  • Ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, if not covered by other staff
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • A strong sense of respect for confidentiality involving both clients and fellow employees

To be successful in the Security Officer position, you need to be able to fulfill the following Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide support, safety, and security for all VOA housing locations and residents
  • Provide crowd control for all VOA housing locations
  • Conduct facility and perimeter walks throughout shift and review cameras
  • Observe and report any suspicious, illegal, and/or criminal activity
  • Observe and report all lease and program violations
  • Document events, gather and share information with Case Managers, so they can follow up with clients/residents
  • Work with and respect all clients/residents, guests, and those, who may potentially become clients/residents regardless of circumstance, behavior, or need
  • Help to identify residents who may require additional assistance with services in the community (chemical dependency treatment, mental health treatment, individual counseling, money management and medical treatment, etc.)
  • Work overnight from 7:00 or 8:00 PM until 3:00 or 4:00 AM
  • Stay awake and alert throughout entire shift
  • Deliver/Post legal documents including but not limited to: Termination of Tenancy, 10-day Comply or Vacate, 20-day Pay or Vacate, 3-day Quit and other notices
  • Provide all required documentation in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all documents submitted on behalf of client are valid
  • Complete a Nightly Shift Report of services provided to participants and programs
  • Be available on-call
  • Wear Security-appropriate attire approved by Supervisor (Badge will be provided)
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, training, and coaching
  • Accept the responsibility for developing and maintaining a positive team relationship
  • Adhere to Agency policies, procedures, professional code of ethics, and boundaries
  • Drive to multiple locations throughout the shift
