UCI Intercollegiate Athletics seeks a project driven individual to build and lead a Sports Performance department within Intercollegiate Athletics. Under general direction from the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, the Executive Director of Sports Performance builds a successful integrated approach to student-athlete health and performance and oversees the delivery of quality health care and performance support to all 400 UCI Division 1 elite student-athletes. The position directly supervises Sports Medicine and Strength & Conditioning. Primarily focused on overseeing Athletic Training, Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning, and Physical Therapy, the position provides an integrated approach to drive performance and well-being of student athletes. The position will also oversee the medical relationship with designated team doctors.
The Executive Director of Sports Performance is responsible for the successful implementation of high performance strategies and management outcomes, particularly in relation to Sports Performance. The position oversees department activities to achieve defined operational objectives.
The successful candidate must be organized, self-motivated and have a strong knowledge of leading-edge sports performance trends and strategies. Must think strategically about sports performance, the integration of different fields into on-field success and demonstrates strong communication and management skills. Must be an experienced practitioner who understands the high performance sport environment, with an understanding of the overall program vision.
Range $100,000.00 - $150,000.00
Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred
8+ years of related experience
Prior experience in strategic planning to achieve high performance in intercollegiate sports
Proven success in building strategic relationships and a proven capacity to influence, appeal and work in collaboration with athletes, coaches and other stakeholders
Knowledge of high performance science, elite athletes and skilled athletes
Knowledge of the complex array of services essential to the creation of a training environment as and team performance
Understanding of the economic impact associated with intercollegiate sport and performance coupled with an ability to use best practices to ensure health, safety and welfare of student-athletes
Ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
Ability to present and display professional demeanor at all times
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and time management skills
Ability to strategically plan, execute plans, and monitor success
Team player mentality
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint
Ability to influence and unify others, both internal and external to the organization.
Demonstrates and utilizes strong emotional empathy
Philosophically providing all athletes with the opportunity to see a physician if he or she makes this request to a certified staff member.
Insuring that each athlete has the best possible opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in a physically healthy environment.
Assuring that each athlete is carefully counseled regarding their injury or illness and options are explained when appropriate.
Creating a comfortable caring environment within managed units.
