Stem is looking for an effective System Optimization Engineer to work with other staff engineers and data scientists to analyze the operational characteristics of Stem’s Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and Energy Storage Devices (ESD), and leverages optimization software to collect, analyze and make data-informed recommendations on a comprehensive operational strategy that maximizes the overall battery capacity, lifetime and asset effectiveness. The candidate will also provide support for validating and reconciling cost & revenue streams. S/he will also initiate and lead energy analyses, making recommendations for next-generation ESS assets.
This person will work within Stem’s MRO (Maintenance & Repair Operations) team as key contributor of system optimization and performance management; working closely with the NOC (Network Operations Center), Field Services, Sustaining Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Customer Operations, Quality, Hardware & Software Development, and Data Science.
Optimize the performance & utilization of our ESS products.
Analyze and report on operational excellence and system performance by prescribing improvements to existing product operations.
Use multiple data sources to continuously analyze operational characteristics and make recommendations on strategies to maximize asset performance throughout the asset lifecycle.
Reduce the risk of premature product failures.
Developing proactive maintenance and service plans based on trended fleet performance and failure analysis.
Provide technical support for daily operations, process advancements, and design improvements.
Conduct battery performance evaluation and testing, collecting and analyzing operational data to develop plans and recommendations to optimize performance.
Support in defining requirements for NOC monitoring tools & anomaly detection.
Determining root cause for systemic failures and implementing corrective/preventative actions.
Create and maintain dashboards that include system performance and failure reports, charts, diagrams showing trends, proposed solutions, and the effectivity of implemented solutions.
Provide feedback loop for future system specifications.

Operational experience with direct access electricity, renewable energy, and/or electrical storage system portfolios with high uptime requirements.
Experience with enterprise data historians.
Knowledge of environmental and safety rules, regulations, and policies associated with power generation or other industrial facilities.
Understanding of demand response and capacity bidding programs to make expert recommendations while minimizing risk exposure.
Understanding of battery electrochemical systems and electrochemistry.
Proficiency in technical and business strategy development that is applicable to battery technology.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of battery materials, components, performance, impedance, cell testing/data analysis, and failure modes.
Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering discipline, or another degree field with relevant experience.
4-6 years of relevant experience or combination of advanced degrees and relevant experience
