SCAD seeks a Curator to create compelling modern and contemporary art and design exhibitions. The Curator of SCAD exhibitions is an essential part of the SCAD Museum of Art senior team and provides support, leadership, and vision to all museum areas. Reporting directly to the head curator and in close contact with the executive director, the curator will research and conceptualize, propose, implement, and promote exhibitions primarily for the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah but also for all SCAD locations and exhibition venues as required in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia; Hong Kong; Lacoste, France; and off-site locations.

In this role, you will participate in the study of museum collections utilization and collaboratively contribute with curatorial staff to overall exhibition programming. You will work collaboratively with all museum and exhibitions departments including producers, art preparators, registrars, the museum operations team, and other university departments to maximize the outreach and impact of the exhibition program and to further the mission, vision, and values of the university.

You will develop proposals for exhibitions, including contextual research, conceiving ways in which these exhibitions could enhance the student experience; develop exhibition checklists for approved exhibitions; develop production plans; liaise with galleries and communicate effectively and professionally with prospective artists about exhibition spaces, logistics, and deadlines prior to the exhibition; design exhibition layout and personally oversee layout and installation of exhibitions; prepare talking points and supporting research for museum docents; prepare itineraries and host visiting artists and other guests; and conduct studio visits with artists as needed.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated professional, an excellent project manager, an outstanding public speaker, and a strong advocate for contemporary art. You will be expected to develop relationships with SCAD faculty in various departments, fostering dialogue to create shared goals for programming; develop and execute community-based and educational programs to complement major exhibitions; present curatorial talks and tours of exhibitions to the SCAD community, patrons, and public; conduct class visits as requested; and network with arts organizations and media as required. You also will demonstrate an extraordinary ability to plan and implement several exhibitions and programs simultaneously. Knowledge of and an interest in performance art, contemporary design, and related disciplines is desired. Specialization in curatorial fields such as Latin American, African-American, and Asian contemporary art is a plus, as are high ethical standards.

Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in art history, curatorial studies, critical theory, or a related field
  • Four to five years of museum or exhibition space experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Extensive exhibition experience and technical knowledge of installing work in different mediums
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in standard museum curatorial practices, exhibition development, and demonstrated networking in the national and international contemporary art world
  • Outstanding skills in research, writing, and communication, demonstrated by published articles, books, or essays
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with artists, other institutions, donors, and collectors is essential.
