Full Job Description
At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test future consumer VR and AR experiences. As part of our team, you will develop state of the art mechanical structures, mechanisms, and solutions for next generation prototypes. You will become part of a team chartered with the exploration of new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype, and can envision how a prototype could transition into a high-volume consumer product. The chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.
Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities
Drive Mechanical Engineering activities in cross-functional team environment
Apply rigorous engineering to model, build, test, and refine prototypes
Participate on a research team providing advice/guidance/insights to your peers in your area(s) of expertise
Transform ambiguous requests and vendor reference designs into working custom solutions
Incubate new technologies into research prototypes
BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
5+ years of experience working on complex ME designs in collaborative, cross functional environments
3+ years of experience working on high-volume consumer products
Experience in 3D design modeling (SolidWorks or NX) and PDM (Teamcenter) and physical prototyping
Experience with component/system level modeling and optimization DOE and DFSS
Experience with mass production of systems requiring variety of manufacturing processes: soft goods, active optical alignment, multishot/insert molding, machining
Experience with one of more of the following: precision design and measurement (GD&T, CMM, OMM ), elastomeric materials and their manufacturing limitations, FEA
Familiarity with VR/AR systems or wearable technologies
Experience designing haptics devices, mechanisms and actuators into novel customer experiences
Experience demonstrating strong aptitude for creative problem solving
