Position Summary

The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) is designed for undergraduate students and recent college graduates to increase their knowledge and interest in public health and biomedical science careers. The program serves as a platform that integrates science with practical experiences for future public health professionals, physicians, dentists, nurses and research scientists, giving them a head start for a career in or relating to the public health sector.

SPHSP is a partnership between the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the College of Dental Medicine, the School of Nursing and the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Together they represent the broad spectrum of public health practice. SPHSP has been made possible through grant funding awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office of Minority Health & Health Equity.

The 2019 program will be held from May 28th through July 31st, hosting up to 50 summer scholars.


SPHSP Program Facilitators will assist with managing Public Health courses and general program execution for up to 50 scholars. The cohort of program scholars is made up of undergraduate students and recent college graduates from diverse backgrounds. Program scholars generally have varying skillsets and require guidance for education advancement and career exploration. Ideal candidates for the SPHSP Program Facilitator positions are those interested in working with students who fit the demographics previously described. The Program Facilitator role also provides opportunities to assist with exercising curriculum construction, and establishing/executing course instruction and differentiation skills. Program Facilitators will be paid at a rate of $20.00 per hour.

Job Responsibilities

SPHSP Program Facilitators will be required to:
  • understand the overall goals and objectives of the program
  • attend a job orientation and all training sessions (dates to be determined)
  • be available for the entire duration of the program (May 28th through July 31st)
  • live on-campus with the program scholars for the duration of the program and participate in an on-call duty schedule
  • attend and take attendance at all class sessions and program
  • assist with general management and execution of courses, seminars and field trip;
  • serve as chaperones for program field trips
  • assist to lead course review and internship discussion sessions for program scholars
  • conduct weekly office hours to provide academic support for students working to meet program completion requirements
  • provide assistance with final evaluations of students in respective groups
  • attend weekly staff meetings
  • coordinate and host weekend social events
  • assist to lead neighborhood tours at the Morningside and Medical Center campuses during orientation for program scholars
  • assist Program Coordinator with internship site visits
  • attend to other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree or equivalency required.
Preferred Qualifications

Demonstration of leadership and organizational skills
MPH student who has successfully completed at least 1 year of graduate study
Columbia University students are preferred
