Storage Hardware Architect - vSAN Engineering

The Storage and Availability Business Unit (SABU) is looking for a Hardware Storage Architect to join our vSAN engineering team. This individual should have a strong technical background in the areas of systems, system software and firmware relating to storage, complimented by a proven record of developing and shipping innovative technology and products. vSAN is a market leader in hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) storage that is changing the way VMware customers manage and consume data storage. The individual will work closely with Product Management to define product requirements, author deployment specifications and will be part of the engineering teams that does the product development. He/she is expected to have end-to-end product expertise from a hardware perspective, collaborate with VMware’s field and interact directly with customers and platform OEM’s. The individual will contribute to discussions and vSAN deployment policies with VMWare hardware vendors, and customers. This also includes policies relating to storage devices, controllers, and server platforms; understand and influence next generation storage hardware system and component design.

Design and develop storage solutions and products with an emphasis on hardware - software integration and architecture. Define and execute hardware certification processes and software suites that can be utilized by a broad community of partners. Participate in and review detailed technical architecture and designs; perform code reviews and as required contribute to product development. Partner with R&D, QA engineering and development teams, both internal and external, to deliver high value quality solutions. Communicate effectively, both internally and externally which will include creating and delivering presentations, articles and knowledge based content, blog posts and presentations. The ability to work closely with hardware vendors and partners in a professional manner is expected.


8+ years of experience in enterprise storage system design and development.
Expertise in hardware components, such as PCIe, hard drives, SSD, SAS, SATA, storage controllers, NVMe, and storage server architectures.
Knowledge of developing technologies such as NVMeOF, NVDIMM, dis-aggregated storage infrastructure and, storage fabrics.
Deep knowledge of storage protocols and standards, such as SAS, SATA, NVMe, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, RDMA.
Required knowledge of C and Python
Partner / Vendor collaboration experience is a must have.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Bachelors in Computer Science Engineering or related Engineering discipline, plus 8+ years of industry experience. Graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related Engineering discipline preferred.
