The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting job opportunity for a R&D Technician in our Research and Development Function located in Collegeville, PA. The incumbent will provide technical support to Lead Scientists and Technologist Leader in the preparation and execution of experimental activities and studies. Technical support may be for one or more of: product development, application development, technical service, and product or process research.
Work as part of a team in a laboratory supporting chemists and engineers in developing, screening and commercializing new products and process. Responsible for managing, then safely executing laboratory work requests, maintaining and running relevant laboratory apparatus and testing equipment and documenting data Prepares for and independently performs standard and some non-routine procedures using relevant equipment and instruments. Activities may include sample or materials preparations, equipment setup and/or configurations, and proper handling and disposal of waste materials that may be generated from experimental activities. Develops a specific expertise within the department and laboratory work group in specific procedures, equipment, or instruments which may include training operators on specific processes.
Understands the value of high quality data and utilizes Good Laboratory Practices (or equivalent) to generate such data. Accurately and reliably records readings and observations using relevant equipment and instruments. Responsible to maintain thorough and accurate data as required. Organizes and prepares data tables and charts for inclusion in Technical reports.
Responsible for calibration, safe operation, and routine maintenance of simple and moderately complex instruments or machinery. Troubleshoots faulty equipment effects repairs or initiates repair processes as appropriate. Maintains and updates personal knowledge for proper use of equipment via manuals and job aids, logs maintenance activities and calibration results as required. Utilizes management of change (MOC) process for new or non-routine tasks and procedures.
Maintain inventories of consumable materials, chemicals, and supplies related to activities. This is done by anticipating usage rates, order lead times, and ordering/purchasing procedures. Includes appropriate knowledge of handling and storage requirements for various compounds, supplies, etc.
Promptly and effectively communicates issues to Technology Leader or lead scientists in order to enable or accelerate problem resolution.
Actively participate in work group team meetings to address safety, process improvement, problem solving, and other work group, department, and functional topics.
2 years or more of laboratory experience require.
Requires basic use of standard workstation software, including Word for basic word processing and Excel for data recording and simple data analysis. May also require basic skills for use of specialized computer-based systems software applications relevant to supported technologies.
Understanding of laboratory operation and basic Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements such as safe operating procedures and management of change.
Understanding of science and technology practices with demonstration of accuracy and attention to detail.
Proficient at creating charts and graphs
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills are required.
Must have strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills.
Demonstrate leadership skills - inspire others and lead them through influence.
A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks.
Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
Must be able to do the following with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Must be willing and able to work in such environments wearing safety equipment, such as earplugs, goggles, and steel-toed shoes.
Must be willing and able to work in such environments with frequent bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Must be willing and able to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED is required.
Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or similar technology field OR 4+ years military experience preferred.
