Reporting directly to the college President, the Vice President heads an office that has grown from $1 million gross revenue in 2013 to over $3 million last year. Building on this momentum the Vice President is responsible for implementing a vision to increase major gifts capacity and work toward an organized fundraising campaign. The Vice President is also the primary steward of the Board of Directors of BMCC’s supporting foundation, a separate 501(c)(3) organization with approximately $8 million under management. The Vice President leads a staff of six professionals within a major College division and serves as a member of the President's Cabinet. He/she is a dynamic leader of an executive team responsible for personnel, budget, operations, and communications.
Located in Tribeca, Borough of Manhattan Community College serves almost 27,000 matriculated degree students and 10,000 non-credit students. Our public mission serves hard-working students, many the first in their families to attend college, and who are arguably the most deserving for an opportunity for success. We are able to attract the involvement of some of the most prominent leaders in the City. The President and her development team are expanding outreach efforts by engaging in high-level meetings with these members of our business constituency in lower Manhattan and beyond.
The preferred candidate will have a strong commitment to the community college mission and working in a diverse multi-cultural environment. He/she will collaborate with members of the college, the BMCC Foundation Board of Directors, and business communities to ensure the needs of BMCC students are met. He/she will have direct experience soliciting major gifts and demonstrated success in fundraising and working with volunteers. BMCC has substantially grown its annual fundraising gala with celebrity honorees including Robert DiNiro, Billy Crystal and Liev Schreiber. The Vice President must be prepared to make the most of recent momentum and committed to executing a thoughtful plan to increase outreach, increase alumni participation, and enlarge major gifts fundraising opportunities.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. Bachelor's degree required (master's degree preferred) and a minimum of eight to ten years experience, six of which should be as a top-level executive administrator; interpersonal and communication skills are required. Experience working in a large public institution or not for profit organization is highly desirable .
Demonstrated success in a development function, managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources and soliciting major gifts. Ability to inspire the confidence and respect of others. Able to be a creative and resourceful problem-solver who can deal with some level of ambiguity and strive to build consensus and execute strategy. Strong knowledge of principles, ethics and best practices of successful fundraising or marketing. Unimpeachable personal integrity. Knowledge of the nonprofit sector, specifically the role of Boards and relevant committees. Ability to understand financial reporting, to command the day-to-day financial status of an organization, and ability to convey that information so that others understand. Demonstrated success growing fundraising programs and exceeding goals. Effective writing skills, especially to varied audiences (external solicitations, personal correspondence, etc.). Ability to lead and manage day-to-day department operations in a way that inspires subordinates, encourages synergistic work, and encourages personal growth. A commitment to the importance of data capture and data integrity with experience in CRM software (e.g. Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge or similar). Excellent interpersonal skills, including flexibility, sense of humor and ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically with a wide variety of constituencies.
