The Department of Buildings and General Services Team located in Montpelier, VT is looking for a Purchasing Agent to provide statewide purchasing and contracting needs. This position provides the opportunity to be engaged in all areas of procurement some of which include outreach to vendors, contract services, request for proposal/request for quotes (RFP/RFQ’s), statements of work (SOW), work within the Vision system along with other tasks. Class Definition

Technical and administrative work for the State Purchasing Division of the Department of General Services involving the procurement of assigned materials, commodities, contract services, supplies, and equipment for use by state agencies and departments. The role may include negotiation of financing packages for purchases and insurance coverage for state agencies. Supervision is exercised over a technical subordinate. There is extensive contact with purchasers and vendors. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Senior Purchasing Agent.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed primarily in a normal office setting. However, incumbents may be required to visit state agencies and vendors, warehouses and auction sites. Incumbents must have access to private vehicle for such occasions. The role involves resolution of disagreements between vendors and purchases which can become quite heated at times. Workload volume is heavy.

Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years or more at or above a technical level in inventory management, purchasing, product testing, contract administration, or as a manufacturer's representative.


Professional certification as a Certified Purchasing Manager or Certified Public Purchasing Official AND two (2) years or more at or above a technical or professional level in inventory management, purchasing, merchandising, procurement, product testing, contract administration, or as a manufacturer's representative.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a government setting.

Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration or economics
