3. Ensures nursing history and physical assessment of patient is completed, interdisciplinary clinical pathway initiated, patient education completed, and all necessary documentation and forms are complete.

Provides quality nursing care and thorough nursing documentation. Initiates pre-operative checklist, and assures patient readiness for scheduled procedure as outlined in departmental protocols. Will exhibit exceptional nursing assessment skills. Maintains awareness of incomplete chart and informs the OP Supervisor of any problems encountered.

4. Initiates/documents preoperative and discharge planning and patient teaching involving patient/significant other.

Will schedule pre-admission appointments with the patient, to have their pre-admission completed. Consistently assesses/documents patient/significant others level of knowledge regarding preoperative preparation and discharge needs. Provides teaching in identified areas of knowledge deficit. Initiates pre and post anesthesia instruction. Ensures patient/significant others understanding of all teaching. Provides self-care instructions, gathering data for and teaching from printed instructions. Facilitates compiling of patient education materials and folders.

5. Assures all lab work, EKG, and x-rays are obtained.

Order all lab work, EKG, and x-rays using Meditech. Communicates effectively with physician’s offices in regard to orders and treatments. Completes tasks unsupervised, in a timely manner, and keeps other departments involved in the patients care and of pending problems.

6. Analyzes pertinent data, communicates findings, documents information accurately.

Exhibits ability to interpret abnormal clinical findings, relays them appropriately, follows through with interventions. Notifies surgeon and/or anesthesiologist of all abnormal results. Initiates notification without prompting. Maintains awareness that each patient may present different problems requiring departure from the guidelines. Addresses variances utilizing critical thinking and nursing skills.

7. Provides accountability for area of assigned responsibility.

Provides proper notification and follows Hospital policy for use of personal time off. Has no disciplinary action regarding attendance. Ensures coverage of area if unable to report to work as assigned. .

8. Demonstrates competency in providing patient/family education.

Initiates and documents patient teaching including family and/or significant others. Uses appropriate Patient Education documentation modality. Reviews process with patient/family . assesses patient/family understanding, answers questions and provides pertinent information as requested. Documents teaching per department policy. Makes positive suggestions for patient education improvements. Assists in developing teaching materials appropriate to department/unit functions.

9. Communicates effectively and professionally with peers, supervisors, ancillary departments and all other

external/internal customers.

Interacts professionally, cooperatively and courteously with all customers and peers. Is easily approachable, reacts calmly and under stressful situations, receives constructive criticism well. Does not criticize, condemn, or complain about peers. Maintains confidentiality. Uses appropriate conversation in front of customers and co-workers. Initiates communication to resolve conflict in an assertive but tactful manner. Utilizes chain of command appropriately for conflict resolution.

10. Organizes/prioritizes patient care and assignments for maximum safety, efficiency, and departmental efficacy.

Provides for a smooth operation and efficient flow of patient care. Responds appropriately to changes in workload, patient census and staffing level. Sets appropriate priorities in providing patient care. Responds to changes with positive and professional behavior and works at optimal efficiency.

11. Schedules surgical procedures and communicates schedule to ancillary departments using Meditech. Accurate verbal, andwritten communication skills are a must. Act as a liaison between the hospital and physician. Analyzes identified problems and proposes workable solutions. Provides quality scheduling work and ensures accurate completion of the pre-admission process. Facilitates completion of department assignments, such as statistical reports.

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:
Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program (required)
BSN or current enrollment in a BSN program at an accredited school of Nursing (preferred)
Tuition Reimbursement Program ($5,250/calendar year)
