The Phoenix Police Department Laboratory Services Bureau is a nationally accredited forensic laboratory that provides technical assistance and training, evaluates and analyzes evidence, interprets results and provides expert testimony related to the full spectrum of physical evidence recovered from crime scenes. The scientific procedures utilized by the laboratory have the potential for linking a suspect to a crime, victim, or a scene.

The Crime Scene Specialist I position provides technical support to Police Officers and Forensic Scientists in analyzing, photographing, collecting, and preserving physical evidence. Crime Scene Specialists photograph and record crime scenes showing correlation between evidence and scene, and perform various analytical techniques such as chemical and photographic processes in the field and / or laboratory to analyze, develop, and preserve evidence. Work is performed in the field, including crime scenes, at the Medical Examiner’s Office, and in the Laboratory.

Crime Scene Specialists differ from Forensic Scientists in that they are involved in collecting and processing evidence from crime scenes and Forensic Scientists utilize science in a laboratory environment to process controlled substances, toxicology, etc.

SALARY

$17.17 (minimum) - $24.92 (maximum) hourly / $35,714 - $51,834 annually.

Candidates may be hired above the minimum depending upon qualifications.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

One year in crime scene processing or photography OR an associate’s degree in criminal justice, chemistry, or a related field.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related physical tasks as part of the Police Department’s selection process.
Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, callout and evenings may be required. Some vacancies occur on second / third shift.
Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
Requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
This is a driving position. For positions requiring the use of personal or City vehicles on City business: individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess an appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license, possess personal insurance coverage, and have an acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The job requirements listed above, plus:

Associates degree in a criminal justice, natural science degree (i.e., Biology, Chemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Forensic Science), criminalistics, or a closely related field.
Crime Scene Certification through the International Association for Identification (IAI).
