Reporting to the Vice President, Public Safety & Security, the Director of Security oversees the Special Police Officers and the Physical Security Program for the Washington Nationals. Responsibilities include Safety Act Support, overall organizational security strategies, security and safety programs and oversight for event and non-event operational security oversight. The scope of this role covers all utilized security technologies and services, including protection services, perimeter defenses, physical and logical access control, and profile management of all employees, contractors and visitors access control credentials. This person has responsibility for all Special Police Officer’s investigations, confidential data collection and protection, to include but limited to the development of security policies, standards, evaluations, roles, and the overall security protection of the facility.
This individual will work with all internal organization departments, third party groups, law enforcement and public safety agencies in the development and implementation of security strategy designed to provide a high level of security protection for the ballpark. In addition, this individual will be responsible for restricting freedom of movement in the appropriate areas of the ballpark to the appropriate people; while preserving and enhancing the facilities general freedom of movement used by fans and visitors at the appropriate times. This individual must be able to develop and implement flexible security solutions, dictated by the needs of a hybrid and rapidly evolving decentralized ballpark business environment, at the appropriate times and achieved superior security customer focused results.
This individual must be a results-oriented individual who can achieve tangible improvements in the ballpark security arena. Excellent technical and communications skills are a must, as well as proven security leadership abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develops, implements and manages safety and security policies, standards, procedures and plans for baseball and non-baseball events at the Nationals Park. This may include, but is not limited to: creation of safety and security awareness programs, crisis management, business continuity, workplace violence prevention, disaster preparedness plans and Major League Baseball Best Stadium Operations and Practices. Oversee the Nationals application for Safety Act Certification and ongoing compliance.
Directs and oversees security and safety compliance with organizational objectives including 24/7 Ballpark Security Staff, Event Security Staff, and other third-party contracted relationships.
Directs and manages safety and security for VIPs and celebrity visits, meets with Security Teams to strategize arrivals and departures, safe shelter locations, emergency medical procedures and on-site public safety coordination.
Assists with writing and implementation of the following plans: Critical Incident Emergency Response Plan, Business Continuity and Crisis Response Plan, ISS Emergency Notification System, Best Stadium Operating Practices, Alcohol Policies for Nationals Park, Drone Incursion Security Plan, Field Security Plans, Prohibited Items List, Nationals Park Delivery Procedures, Bomb Threat Security Checklist, Active Shooter Protocols, etc.
Serves as a member and/or leads various response teams, such as the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), to ensure timely implementation of safety plans to maintain business continuity and incident recovery.
Responsible for directing the activities of the Special Police Office Program, Event Crowd Management Contract and the Off-Duty Uniform Metropolitan Police Augmented Security Force.
Directs and oversees the , business partners, vendors, coaches and players, ensuring compliance with MLB Best Stadium Operating Practices. Ensures credentials are issued appropriately and returned upon employee departures.
Directs and oversees the ISS Incident Management System for the Security Department. Ensures security staff are vetted and given electronic access to the system to manage 24/7 and event day operations in an efficient manner. Reviews incident reports and distributes to appropriate stakeholders as appropriate.
Directs and discreetly oversees safety and security operations during employee terminations as needed.
Seeks out relevant security information and training materials to distribute on the premises, via company Intranet postings and though other approved methods of communication to employees. Conducts internal safety and security training to employees as needed.
Performs security audit functions which may include facility inspections of public, restricted, back of house areas to identify security vulnerabilities and safety concerns. Conducts internal audits to test and verify compliance with established security plans. Develops management reports identifying opportunities for further security and safety improvements and implements action items to resolve deficiencies or improve service delivery.
Directs and oversees research, installation, maintenance and repair of all physical security equipment, including metal detection devices, Closed Circuit TV, electronic access control and alarm systems. Approves and directs the work of internal technicians or vendor-provided personnel assigned to security equipment projects.
Maintains accountability for all security and safety files, logs and reports for the required period of time in a manner to quickly and accurately recall any required/requested information.
Assists with annual budget, strategic business plans and performance metrics for the Security Department.
Directs and oversees home and visiting team departures on getaway days from Nationals Park.
Works closely with MLB to ensure compliance with Best Stadium Operating Practices.
Responsible for the continuous monitoring and protection of facilities, personnel and the interests of the Nationals. Evaluate suspected security breaches and recommend corrective actions (including incidents involving outside vendors, organizations and personnel).
Define and implement an ongoing Nationals Risk Assessment program, which will define, identify, and classify critical assets, assess threats and vulnerabilities regarding those assets, and direct implementation of the appropriate safeguards and recommendations.
Establish and monitor formal “best practice” professional development certification programs for the Special Police Officer Program; such as First Aid, CPR, CERT, Crowd Manager, Department of Homeland Security Training, etc.
Project manage security related capital improvements at Nationals Park.
Be proactive in recommending changes to the Nationals Ballpark environment for security impact relative to current events and threat levels and present findings to management.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field, or equivalent military experience; or equivalent demonstrated work experience in the field of Law Enforcement, Public Safety, Physical Security Industry or be a former leader/advisor in the Military.
Minimum of 15 years of security and safety related experience that demonstrates initiative, leadership, effective communication, problem solving skills, conflict resolution and solid project management.
Minimum of 10 years of management experience.
Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Certified Sports Safety Professional (CSSP) or other industry related certifications a plus. Industrial safety experience and/or working knowledge of OSHA regulations strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions
Ability to interface with top management, as well as, excellent staff management skills.
The ability to advise top management on the operational requirements related to security and compliance with all District of Columbia, Security Management Branch, Major League Baseball and Washington Nationals Baseball Club rules, regulations, and policies.
Must be experienced in managing, designing and working with physical security systems.

Knowledge/demonstrated experience with large crowd security procedures.
Knowledge/demonstrated experience of basic supervision and management with large crowd environments.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with event participants, especially where alcohol is served.
Knowledge of legal methods, security equipment, policies and procedures of law enforcement, investigations, and court proceedings in such venues.
Ability/demonstrated experience with evaluating situations, making decisions, and reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to administer the enforcement of laws and Nationals policies firmly, tactfully, and with respect to the right of others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with a diverse group of individuals, both internal and external.
Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed.

Gameday: Job requires employee to function in a high activity and heavily crowded outdoor professional sports venue. May work at heights. Employee will be exposed to inclement weather of varying degrees. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/down stairs. The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
