Direct Support Professionals are responsible for providing hands on support to persons with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and Autism. They provide ongoing support, counseling and assistance to the program participants while implementing person centered habilitation plans. DSPs provide assistance and instruction to each program participant in basic activities of daily living, independent living skills, socialization, health care and community inclusion.
The pay rate range for this position is $17.00 - $18.27 per hour depending on years of prior experience with NYS OPWDD programs.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
- Valid Driver’s License required
- Prior experience assisting persons with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities and/or Autism
- Ability to support people with their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as toileting, showering and feeding
- Ability to lift an adult using a two person lift and adaptive equipment
- Successfully complete the medication administration (AMAP) course and annual recertification
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Ability to learn how to document services electronically
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provide ongoing oversight to people living in the residence
- Implement Person Centered Residential Habilitation Plans
- Provide training and support for each person in accordance with the individual personalized program plan
- Have scheduling flexibility; may be required to work beyond the normal shift
- Drive agency vans and demonstrate safe driving practices
