Art Director

SmartPak Equine LLC - Plymouth, MA

We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated individual to help direct our design team in the tactical execution of projects from catalog, advertising, print marketing collateral to emails, display ads, and online landing pages. This person should be a brilliantly talented designer who can also provide direction to a team to make the “big picture” brand vision come to life in marketing materials.

The ideal candidate is proactive and willing to take initiative and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while directing a team and collaborating interdepartmentally. Strong attention to detail and accuracy is critical, as is the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and budget personal and team time effectively. This person should be extremely flexible and an open communicator who is willing to take and give direction even when priorities change. This person should also be able to develop unique, strong solutions and provide strong reasons and data to support design choices.

What you’ll do (responsibilities):
§ Understand overall Business, Brand, Marketing and Merchandising vision, goals, priorities and challenges

§ Articulate the vision and goals to the Creative team in ways that encourage actionable design solutions

§ Develop innovative, eye-catching, and consistently superior visual marketing materials that increase brand awareness, solidify customer loyalty and, ultimately, drive sales

§ Direct the execution of marketing campaigns across all channels, helping develop style guides and determining what elements communicate the vision most strongly

§ Work with lead designers on individual efforts to establish the conceptual and stylistic direction, assuming or sharing the role of lead designer if needed

§ Organize and plan details for multiple projects, making timely decisions and working with the Project Manager to set, maintain and communicate schedules

§ Ensure the brand look and feel is in line with company priorities and Creative Director’s vision, keeping the customer and her experience in mind in all touchpoints, and ensuring marketing materials are cohesive and instantly recognizable as SmartPak

§ Collaborate with Creative Director, Creative Project Manager, Production Manager and Designers to define requirements, expectations and deadlines for creative projects

§ Lead and participate in creative brainstorm meetings to determine project specifications and develop and present concepts

§ Evaluate and elevate the performance of creative team members

§ Maintain collaborative relationships with internal customers (e.g., Merchandising, Marketing, etc.)

§ Embrace diversity of ideas and thinking

§ Partner with the Creative Director to ensure the resources are in place to create visually compelling designs that drive revenue

§ Stay up to date on design trends, production technology and brand marketing

§ Serve as a “Creative Expert” in current design trends and best practices

§ Study ideas, concepts and options to decide which ones will work best within the budget and time frame

§ Resolve problems on the fly and in creative ways that meet or exceed expectations

§ Review work before it goes to internal approvals, ensuring the overall product meets project goals and is appealing to the customer

  • Manage graphic designers, interactive designers, and other Creative team roles
  • Perform other duties as assigned
How you’ve done it before (experience + qualifications)

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design or related field with 8+ years of print and digital design experience
  • Experience managing art direction, copywriting, and photography with direct marketing catalog and email experience a plus
  • Combination of agency and in-house design experience preferred
  • Strong design background with knowledge of Adobe suite (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop) as well as Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of HTML
  • Exceptional project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • An eye for creative detail including layout, typography, and photography
  • A track record of successfully managing graphic designers
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work in a team environment to produce quality work and meet strict deadlines
  • The ability to translate established project strategies into clear, concise, and appealing visuals which are consistent with the brand look and feel
  • motivate, encourage and inspire designers, enabling maximum performance and terrific end results
  • Experience directing photo shoots and taking risks to elevate the brand through imagery
  • The ability to handle challenging and stressful situations and manage a complex workflow
  • An open mind, flexible working style, and sense of humor
  • Experience facilitating or leading creative presentations, meetings and brainstorming sessions, cultivating creative collaboration
  • Ability to design across a wide range of marketing materials for print and digital applications
