Working under direct supervision, the Medication Aide performs duties following accepted nursing practices to provide the highest quality of resident care. He or she provides complete care for assigned residents by dispensing medications and providing personal care under the direction of licensed personnel on duty following all established procedures and regulatory guidelines. The Medication Aide dispenses medications, completes some documentation, helps participants with activities of daily living (ADL), leads activity programs, and works closely with families and volunteers. The ideal candidate for this position has a high school diploma or GED, a current certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) and a Registered Medication Aide in this state, current CPR/First Aid certifications, and good computer skills. He or she must have a genuine desire to work with the elderly or disabled and previous experience working with individuals with dementia and some activity programs experience is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Dispenses medications under the direction of a licensed nurse according to established procedures
  • Orders, receives, and inventories medications according to established policies and procedures
  • Documents pertinent information in the resident’s record and completes incident reports as needed
  • Participates in checking or second checking new orders received daily
  • Participates in monthly MAR turnover as assigned
  • Maintains documentation regarding medication administration according to established procedures
  • Contributes to completion of service plans and uses established approaches to reach goals
  • Enters lab requests as needed based on doctors’ orders
  • Ensures needed charts are in the clinic for doctor’s appointments and returned to the neighborhood when completed
  • Documents on shift to shift report and provides pass down report with on-coming shift
  • Orders supplies and nourishment as needed
  • Gives baths including whirlpools and showers and bed baths
  • Helps with general hygiene, including shampoos, nail care, shaving, dressing, and care of dentures and oral hygiene
  • Performs bed making, occupied and unoccupied
  • Performs skin care activities and proper positioning
  • Helps residents with using cane, walker, and gait belt and performs ROM when ordered
  • Helps residents meet restorative goals and transfers residents using proper body mechanics and techniques when needed
  • Performs incontinent care to include peri-care, bowel and bladder training, and toileting and properly disposes of incontinent products
  • Serves as hostess and helps and monitors residents in the dining room as needed
  • Cares for residents with Foley catheters including proper positioning of tubing and drainage bag, emptying bag, and catheter care
  • Performs care for residents with oxygen including observing for complications
  • Takes vital signs and weights as directed on all residents
  • Practices appropriate infection control to include universal precautions
  • Maintains care of linen and resident clothing, clean and soiled
  • Responds promptly to calls from residents and is prepared to act in emergency situations
  • Helps with admission and transfer of residents
  • Participates in in-service education and training and outside professional development as needed to maintain registration/certification
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED with further training to achieve certification
  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) in this state
  • Certified as Registered Medication Aide in this state
  • At least one year food service experience required
  • Able to follow spoken and written instructions in English
  • Knowledge of general sanitary and safety practices
  • Genuine desire to work with the elderly
  • An up-beat and engaging personality
  • Able to exert 50-100 pounds of force to help with resident transfers
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (or is willing to obtain within 60 days of hire)
