Summary of Job:
The Director of Revenue Accounting is an integral member of the Corporate Accounting leadership team that reports to the Vice President & Assistant Controller. The role includes management responsibility for the Revenue Accounting team, comprised of six professionals. This high impact role has significant exposure in Vail Resorts’ finance organization and works directly with the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Accounting Officer, VP / Assistant Controller, other leaders in accounting, and also partners with other leaders within finance, marketing and operations. The Director of Revenue Accounting is primarily responsible for ensuring the proper recognition and reporting of revenue in accordance with US GAAP, as well as the proper recognition and reporting of statistics for all mountain-access and mountain-activity products, both winter and summer (i.e. season pass, lift tickets, sightseeing, etc.), private clubs, and strategic alliances. This role also has responsibility for calculation, payments and audit of fees to regulatory bodies as well as resort integration work for mergers and acquisitions.
Role & Responsibility:
Lead Revenue Accounting’s thought leadership associated with new offerings, complex agreements, and integrations as the revenue recognition expert for the Company.
Excellent understanding of US GAAP, most specifically as it relates to revenue recognition.
Maintain strong working relationships and coordination with Vail Resorts’ financial reporting team to ensure high quality financial reporting for our stakeholders.
Establish and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with executive management, corporate finance partners, marketing, and other internal stakeholder groups to understand the business and ensure timely and accurate exchange of information.
Strong focus on authentic leadership, self-awareness and a key contributor to the development of leaders within Vail Resorts’ Finance.
Service oriented focus on continuous process improvement in order to effectively complete required tasks as well as to successfully integrate acquired resort activities.
Lead and develop the revenue accounting team, with the goal of leveraging team members and creating a strong bench for growth and succession.
Develop staff goals and key performance indicators to measure performance and ensure the department is performing at a high level.
Understand product attributes and behaviors and oversee testing and continuous monitoring of all products within Vail’s point of sale systems to ensure accurate reporting of revenue and stats to the general and daily ledgers.
Lead reporting efforts around winter season 8-K filings disclosing various ski season metrics.
Oversight responsibility for department’s journal entries and balance sheet account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance with US GAAP.
Ensure departmental compliance in a SOX environment and be able to fully understand the risks and be able to perform and monitor controls within the department.
Partner with Marketing and Finance on budgeted, forecasted and actual season pass revenue, including pass partner relationships.
Partner with IT on integrations of POS systems at acquired resorts, including active involvement in ongoing integration meetings, user acceptance testing, and ultimate sign off on production releases.
Ability to read and comprehend complex agreements, including recognizing potential revenue recognition issues and preparing meaningful, comprehensive documents outlining the issues while formulating a recommendation for resolution.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting or a related business field.
MBA or Masters of Science Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline and CPA strongly preferred.
Minimum ten (10) years of progressive experience including public accounting, revenue accounting and/or technical accounting research, including a proven ability to independently form sound conclusions on complex accounting issues and identifying the impact to large, complex organizations.
Proficient with Microsoft Office and a proven ability to work in POS or general ledger systems and understand system configurations, dependencies, complexities, issues, mapping, etc.
Strong attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.
