Overview of Job:
The Adoption Counselor is responsible for promoting animals who are available through our adoption program and matching them to individuals and families looking for their forever friend. The role assesses the traits of the adoptable animal and the preferences of the potential adopter to ensure that the animal and family are a successful match. In addition, the Adoption Counselor promotes and educates clients in regard to all LA/SPCA programs and services.
Success Criteria & Essential Skills:
Excellent customer service skills along with a professional, friendly and outgoing demeanor;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as this role is responsible for taking initiative, and seeking out and screening new breed rescue groups and transport partners to broaden our rescue mission;
Collaborative when working with others to find the best outcome for animals sheltered at the LA/SPCA;
Experienced in working with Websites, Social Media and databases, the job monitors all online venues to make sure adoptable animals have photographs and accurate information posted in a timely manner;
Open to new ideas, this position will assist with adoption promotions, and offsite adoption events on an as-needed basis;
Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals;
This position may be required to assist with euthanasia and will perform euthanasia once certified. This includes handling deceased animals and preparing for their cremation;
Other duties as assigned;
Maintain confidentiality regarding all cases and LA/SPCA information;
Education and/or Experience:
Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D; some college preferred.
Minimum Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge:
Must be able to pass a criminal background check and substance screening.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and databases a must, proficiency a plus.
Strives for and encourages teamwork at all times.
Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid State of Louisiana driver's license
Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
This position is considered "Core" in emergencies and/or weather-related situations meaning that the individual is expected to report for duty and prepare animals and equipment for evacuation.
Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running, standing, bending and stooping.
Must be able to work around all animals and not have nut allergies,
Must be able to work with industrial-strength cleaners and disinfectants.
Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches
Works in an area with a high noise level.
