KATERRA exists to help transform construction through technology - every process and every product.
We provide end-to-end building services, creating new efficiencies between design, engineering, construction, project management, and more. Our integrated teams apply the principles of technology and manufacturing to the building industry, bringing fresh minds and innovative approaches to remove unnecessary time and costs from construction projects.
At KATERRA, we lead from every seat. Our ideal team members are self-starters that embrace ambiguity, think big, and bring their own uncompromising standards of excellence.
Team: Building Performance
Building Performance is a dynamic and diverse team within the technology group at Katerra. We tackle key performance and physics-based challenges for Katerra and seek to expose opportunity through first principles analysis.
We leverage multiphysics simulation and analysis to inform product requirements, create and track key metrics, and anticipate product performance.
We act as system designers and product leads for key physics-based building systems, including the building envelope and SMEP integrated assemblies.
We advocate for quality and reliability across the product development process and lead Katerra's product characterization and certification efforts.
We are a highly collaborative team and work with teams across the technology organization and Katerra more broadly.
Role: Building Systems Product Engineer
Katerra is looking for a product engineer to lead the development of integrated, pre-manufactured systems combining mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection with structural and architectural systems. The Building Systems Product Engineer will develop component building parts (e.g. walls, balconies, roofs, building systems, etc.) for various Katerra building types (known as Platforms) that can be efficiently and elegantly manufactured, delivered, field-installed, and commissioned.
The Building Systems Product Engineer will have the opportunity and responsibility to develop high value building components in close collaboration with manufacturing and traditional design & construction experts. To execute effectively, the candidate will need to rely on deep expertise and practical skills related to one or more specific physics domains (fluid dynamics, material science, acoustics, dynamics, heat transfer, etc.), but will also need to integrate that expertise effectively to solve interdisciplinary design challenges. The candidate should be adept at leading design, analysis, prototyping, and validation activities associated with delivering mass-produced articles.
The Building Systems Product Engineer should be comfortable working within a large, multi-functional and fast-growing organization. The ideal candidate will embrace the idea of solving problems in new ways and bringing those solutions into reality from concept through prototype to production article.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The candidate will be responsible for:
Understanding and characterizing the objectives and requirements of a Katerra platform and transform the integration with architects, building engineering, and construction experts coming from a traditional AEC environment
Coordinating efforts for design methodologies, database structure, and documentation requirements that support the transformation of buildings designed for optimized downstream manufacturing and construction processes.
Developing, testing, and refining solutions that satisfy the multiple, often competing, goals and requirements for the product.
Establish cross-functional development teams to implement new technologies and methodologies, while balancing the real-time requirements around launching revenue generating building platform products.
Validating the product design with respect to requirements for
Form, Fit, and Function
Codes & Regulations
Quality & Reliability
Parts and Material Sourcing
Required Skills & Experience
Demonstrated experience leading and participating in structured product design engineering methodologies for complex product assemblies
Expertise modeling product components and assemblies with a variety of solid modeling tools and associated database management systems.
Experience taking product design through complex regulatory, environmental certification and product verification / validation objectives.
Design for manufacturing/cost (e.g., material selection, optimization, tooling)
Command of building modeling, documentation, and presentation tools
Guide the analysis and development of wall components
Excellent writing, organization, and visual communication skills
Team player driven by a desire to make better buildings
Ability to communicate complex design concepts clearly and quickly using both manual (sketches, mockups, etc.) and digital tools (Sketchup, Adobe, etc.)
Demonstrated ability to interact directly with partners and customers, represent Katerra, and skillfully interpret design requirements
Preferred Skills & Experience
Degree in engineering or physics
Experience with Catia & SolidWorks highly desirable
Experience developing product or technology requirements
Experience with prefabricated building systems and developing multi-disciplinary products for manufacture
Experience with product certification procedures and requirements
Experience with product performance testing procedures and processes
5+ years of relevant experience in product design & development
