Position Title: Language Facilitator (Somali) (SMN-4 effective 7/1/2021)Department: Multilingual Department (ELL)Reports To: Director ELL, Building PrincipalPrepared By: Human Resources Dept. Date: 01/01/2022Approved By: Superintendent of Schools Date: 01/01/2022SUMMARY: Provides support to students and families in a school setting. Supports the work ofteachers and other staff by facilitating effective communication between stakeholders when oneor more parties require language assistance. Supports home school communication by assistingschool staff in contacting and supporting families as needed.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.To support students and families in a school setting.Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English and Somali, and other languages as appropriate.To provide oral interpretation of all oral and written communications as necessary.Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district personnel.Other duties as assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Occasional supervision of individual students or small groups under the direct guidance of ateacher or educational technician III.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be ableto perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Fluency in additional languages beyond English and Somali is preferred.LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write, understand and speak interpersonal and academic English proficiently.Ability to communicate with people of all ages. Ability to accept direction and collaborate withteachers and staff.
Ability to communicate with ELL Program staff and local school district staffthrough electronic mail and/or other means. Ability to represent the school district in aprofessional manner at all times.MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts generally used in the student curriculum.REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and apply school procedures and policies under a variety ofsituations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram orschedule form.OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Valid Maine drivers license and the ability to travel to and from the school building and centraloffice. Ability to work a flexible workday, work week and work year.
Cultural competency to workwith students and families of various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Ability to handleconfidential information with discretion. Ability to accurately complete required paperwork andreports. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements of the position.
Advanced bilingualabilities preferred. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance withboard policy and established administrative guidelines. Ability to establish and maintain effectiveworking relationships with students, school employees, and the public.
