IRC Background:

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. One aspect of the IRC is to provide assistance to refugees resettling in the United States. The IRC opened an office in Phoenix, Arizona in 1994 to provide reception and placement services to newly arrived refugees. The office resettles refugees and provides numerous program services to assist refugees from their arrival through citizenship.

Job Overview:

The Community Engagement Assistant will launch a family mentor program matching qualified and trained volunteer mentors with refugee families. In addition, in collaboration with the Development Team, the Community Engagement Assistant will liaise with local volunteers to further engage the Phoenix community in advocacy and mentorship.

Major Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator, coordinate a family-sponsorship pilot program which will involve recruitment and screening of volunteer mentors; providing training, orientation and daily guidance to mentors; in addition to documenting volunteer hours. This will also entail collaboration with program staff to identify client needs.
  • In collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator, begin planning day of service / day of advocacy events.
  • In collaboration with the Community Engagement Coordinator, work with local Amnesty groups to draft, vet and submit “Welcoming Resolutions” at municipal, state and university / college levels as appropriate.
  • Review materials developed for advocacy and community engagement and develop a strategy on how best to distribute them use as part of the office’s advocacy and community engagement efforts.
  • Liaise with local Amnesty International groups to ensure joint advocacy and engagement efforts are moving forward and being tracked.
  • In collaboration with the Community Engagement Coordinator, develop content for social media, the website and e-newsletter.
  • Tracking and reporting per program needs.
  • Assist the Development Team with donations tracking and sorting as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience working with local community organizations and knowledge of Phoenix community preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English
  • Excellent computer skills, including all Microsoft Office programs and database experience.
  • Able to work independently to represent the agency to donors, volunteers and the community.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Experience in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area.

Working Environment:

Standard office work environment combined some travel throughout service delivery area. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
