Experienced finance professional with strong business acumen and controllership background in Higher Education setting, comfortable working in a fast paced and highly demanding turnaround environment.

The Controller will be accountable for his or her own broad functional area, as well as support the development of broad institutional objectives. In this role, the incumbent will work directly with the CFO as well as cross-departmentally, leading Accounting, Financial reporting (US GAAP and IFRS), Purchasing, and Student Finance functions. S/He will be involved in short and long-term planning and exposed to the overall business strategy. The Controller, under the general direction of the CFO, is the chief accounting officer for the University and is responsible for the quality and administration of the University's accounting including international entities, as well as compliance with general business processes, procedures and internal controls.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for University's general accounting and internal control policies ensuring consistent application of such policies across domestic and international entities.
Responsible for monthly, quarterly and yearly general ledger close processes, assuring that accounts are appropriately reconciled, prepare monthly and quarterly reporting to stakeholders and ensure compliance with US-GAAP, IFRS and Alliant internal policies in coordination with third party accounting services providers.
Responsible for cash forecasts and analysis. Research and advise on questions regarding appropriate accounting treatment for significant and/or unusual financial transactions of the University.
Responsible for annual external financial and SFA compliance audits, as well as annual internal audits. Prepare financial analyses and ad-hoc reports required for external sources including accrediting and government agencies and financial institutions. Ensure resolution of open audit issues and proactively work to prevent future findings / manage risk. Lead implementation of corrective actions throughout the University entities.
Support implementation of Campus Management Nexus as new Student Information System (SIS). Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of SOPs related to financial modules and applications.
Participate in quarterly CFO risk and internal control reviews with key operations and financial management personnel. Work closely with financial and operational leadership to pro-actively assess and manage financial risk.
Drive and provide input into controllership and simplification initiatives.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or equivalent a plus. CPA a plus.

Experience:
Minimum seven (7) years' prior Controllership experience, preferably in the field of higher education.
Demonstrated competence of monthly closes, audit experience, financial modeling, revenue and cost analysis, budgeting and general accounting principles with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP and generally accepted auditing standards, a working knowledge of federal guidelines applicable to the higher education environment. Experience in reporting to a parent company as well as IFRS accounting standards a strong plus.
Experience coordinating external audits, and knowledge regarding student loans, and role of information technology systems.
Demonstrated experience in process improvement and change management is a plus.

Highly proficient in Excel. SQL and MS Access experience preferred. Experience with complex, integrated business software systems needed. Experience with Campus Management View or Nexus systems, SAP. Experience with Jenzabar CX system a plus.

Management Skills:
Develop, support, motivate and supervise professional and administrative staff to perform as an effective team and accomplish unit goals in support of the University Mission and Vision.
Establish and communicate performance expectations and monitor work performance effectively.
Develop and manage the accounting and student finance units budget within resource expectations.
Excellent planning, organizational and coordination skills commensurate with oversight and evaluation responsibilities for a complex set of business and fiscal functions.

Other Requirements:
Minimum 7 years of demonstrated Controller track record in for profit sector. CPA a plus.
