Position Summary*
Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Programs for Campus Recreation, the Fitness & Wellness Coordinator assists the department with development, coordination, and delivery of the Fitness & Wellness Programs in the new, state of the art, 118,700 square-foot, Mashouf Wellness Center (MWC). Programs include fitness floor area, Group Fitness Program, Personal Training, Massage Therapy, and Wellness Programming and collaborations, as part of the Campus Recreation Department at San Francisco State University (SFSU). Incumbent provides: program development, delivery and instruction; advisement and supervision to student assistants in their programs; and recommendations on selection, maintenance, and replacement planning for fitness equipment. Incumbent supports the mission of the SFSU campus, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management (SAEM) cabinet area, and Campus Recreation/MWC.

Position Information
Programming
  • Upon consultation with the Associate Director of Programs, the incumbent assists the department with the coordination, development, demonstration, and direct delivery of the following programs: Fitness Operations, Group X Classes, Wellness, Massage, and Personal Training.
  • The incumbent ensures that the development and coordination of these programs aligns with institutional, departmental, and student success goals.
  • Through well-constructed programming, incumbent provides education around resilience, wellness, goals achievement, and overall fitness and health.
  • Through use of co-curricular experiences and campus life programming, the incumbent also supports student learning and community building.
Fitness Equipment Oversight & Maintenance
  • The incumbent assists in oversight of the MWC Fitness Equipment areas, including making recommendations to purchase proper fitness equipment.
  • The incumbent researches, analyzes, demos, and often tests equipment to verify selections.
  • The incumbent determines the best fitness equipment layouts consistent with good practices in the industry, keeping the department¿s desire to make it a welcoming and inclusive environment at the forefront.
  • The incumbent stays current on new fitness trends, exercises, equipment, and benefits of exercise, and advises/teaches this information in one-on-one and/or group settings.
  • The incumbent demonstrates and advises on the proper usage of equipment to participants based on proper anatomy and exercise physiology principles, and instructs student employees on how to do the same.
  • The incumbent develops departmental policies for upkeep of equipment and serves as the primary liaison with fitness equipment maintenance contractors to ensure equipment is properly maintained.
Student Employee Supervision
  • The incumbent hires, develops, supervises, schedules and mentors approximately 60 student or part-time employees, of varying levels of skill and experience, working within the incumbent¿s programs of oversight (Fitness Operations, Group X Classes, Weilness, Massage, and Personal Training).
  • The incumbent sets expectations and ensures the provision of excellent customer service.
  • The incumbent advises/teaches student employees about time management, organizational skills, effective communication, setting priorities, and increasing their personal fitness and wellness.
Customer Service
  • Working in a high-functioning facility serving students, faculty and staff, the incumbent develops, implements, and refines fitness and weilness program policies and procedures to ensure excellent customer service; and promotes inter- and intra- departmental collaborations and communication, as related to their programs. The incumbent responds positively to feedback, and supports efforts for improvement; establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships; and works independently, and as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications*
General knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods normally obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program and/or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Thorough knowledge or policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty.
  • Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.
  • Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Expertise in investing and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form.
  • Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Exercise Science, or a related field;
  • Understanding of the application of student development concepts, including principles of individual and group behavior, and advising students individually and in groups on routine matters;
  • Experience with developing and promoting programs and services within area of oversight through a lens of social justice, sustainability, accessibility, and non-traditional as well as traditional programming;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Strategic Values and Core Competencies for NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, and SF State¿s Strategic Plan values;
  • Experience hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, evaluating, and developing employees;
  • Experience supervising college students in a college campus setting;
  • Experience with new program and service development and implementation;
  • Experience overseeing a fitness or wellness program including creating and coordinating group fitness classes,particularly in a college environment;
  • Experience overseeing certification prep courses for fitness instruction or personal training;
  • Experience overseeing a wellness education program and delivering educational workshops;
  • Experience overseeing a massage therapy program;
  • Experience overseeing care, maintenance, cleanliness, and layout of fitness equipment;
  • Experience recommending purchases of fitness equipment, supplies, and materials needed for fitness and wellness program operations;
  • Demonstrated technology, software, and hardware skills including the use of Microsoft Office, email and the internet;
  • Experience providing high quality customer service, and contributing to a positive, friendly, work and wellness environment; and
  • Ability to:
  • Oversee daily operations of fitness areas including staff, registrations, and equipment and
facility upkeep;
  • Develop and administer Fitness & Wellness Program Areas including, but not limited to,
hiring and supervising staff (fitness floor staff, personal trainers, massage therapists),
coordinating services and events, and working with Facilities staff and vendors assigned to
maintain fitness, strength, and cardio equipment;
  • Instruct, train, and certify in fitness-related areas, in support of the department¿s and
University¿s goals for health and well-being;
  • Work effectively with students who have a variety of skill and experience levels, and who
will be working in various levels, from entry to program management levels;
  • Plan and implement semester fitness class schedules including a variety of classes such as
yoga, strength, dance, fitness, cycling, kickboxing, etc.;
  • Recognize multicultural, multisexed, and multi-aged value systems and work with students,
faculty, staff, administrators, and community members;
  • Rapidly acquire general knowledge of overall operation and functions of the fitness and
wellness program areas;
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safe instruction and risk
management;
  • Assess the safety, risk management, and environmental needs as applied to the fitness and
wellness programs within the department;
  • Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning and implementing short and long-range
improvements;
  • Collect and evaluate data and make presentations based on these data;
  • Respond positively to feedback and support efforts for improvement;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; and
  • Work independently and as part of a team.

License/Certification Required
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
  • National Fitness Training Certification for Group Exercise and/or Personal Training from the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), or equivalent within three (3) months of hire.
  • Preferred Certification: First AiU/CPR/AED Instructor Certification; Weliness Coach or Health Coach Certification.
Environmental/Physical/Special
The incumbent's duties take place mostly in an office setting or in fitness/recreation spaces, with primary location being at the Mashouf Wellness Center, and with a high amount of contact with participants, most of which are students. Incumbent must be able to: succeed in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; work variable nights, weekends and/or holidays, on-campus or off-site, indoors and outdoors, depending upon work conditions and demands, including an occasional overnight stay; use computers and other communication tools for extended periods of time; and competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and campus community.
