Duties
Summary
This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research Unit, in Aberdeen, ID.

Responsibilities
The incumbent of this position will assist in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to the assigned area of work.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Maintaining and calibrating equipment used for test and evaluation procedures.
Searching for literature pertinent to plant research for new procedures or techniques in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.
Tabulating and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.
Collecting and preparing samples and supporting records related to plant research.
Maintaining an inventory of chemicals and stock solutions.
Performing high volume testing for viruses and other diseases essential to maintaining breeder seed.
Participating in planting and harvest of potatoes in the field.
Travel Required
Occasional travel - Occasional domestic travel required for training and meetings

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Repetitive lifting and carrying bagged potatoes weighing up to 50 pounds, with intermittent loads up to 75 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.

At the GS-6:
Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience collecting and preparing plant samples for biological research in a laboratory or field environment; operating and calibrating laboratory equipment; and maintaining records of experimental data.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include plant pathology, plant breeding/genetics, microbiology, agronomy, entomology.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-07 level:
Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in the preparation of plant samples for biological research in a laboratory or field environment; assisting with the maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment; and keeping records of experimental data.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include pathology, plant breeding/genetics, microbiology, agronomy, entomology.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
