Human Factors Center Description
Located in Washington, D.C., the MedStar Health National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare was founded in 2010 within the MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2) and moved to its new organizational home in the MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI) in 2020. Working in close collaboration with MI2, MHRI, and the MedStar Institute for Quality and Safety, the Center is the nation’s largest human factors program embedded within a healthcare delivery system. Through applied research, usability, safety advisement, and education, the MedStar Health National Center for Human Factors is dedicated to the scientific study of how humans think, work, and interact within the healthcare environment. The Center’s research is translated into clinical practice to improve workflow, efficiency, safety, and technology.
Research Specialist
As a researcher at the MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI), this position is a critical part of the successful team of researchers executing current research activities in healthcare delivery. The Research Specialist will support the design, implementation, and evaluation of human factors research studies which may include a broad range of approaches including observational studies, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, implementation studies (pilot, RCT, etc.), simulation aimed at improving healthcare systems, clinical performance, and patient outcomes. The Research Specialist will also help to identify external funding opportunities as well as partners and collaborative opportunities; conducting research projects through all stages of research study design, data collection, and management, analysis and report writing; disseminating findings; and mentoring junior scientific staff.
Education-
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field required.
Experience-
Experience leading certain aspects of research projects, working autonomously to complete research tasks defined by supervisor required
- 1-2 years demonstrated experience successfully contributing to research projects and working collaboratively as part of a grant-funded research team required

Demonstrated experience conducting research in a healthcare setting (hospital, ambulatory care environment, outpatient clinics) preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities-
Strong analytical skills and background in quantitative and/or qualitative methods.

Leads some aspects of research projects in a portfolio of research at MedStar Health Research Institute that furthers MedStar's mission of advancing health through research.

Works with the assigned MHRI Scientific Center Administrator or their delegate to ensure financial viability of research studies.

Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
