Summary
This position is located within the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, West Haven, in the Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) where all care of live laboratory animals is performed. The animal caretaker is responsible for animal husbandry and care of attendant housekeeping.

Responsibilities
Clean and disinfect animal cages and cage racks using automatic cage washer;
Dump old bedding, dispose of animal wastes, cages or housing floors;
Sterilize cages and bedding using autoclave;
Replenish feed and water bottles/watering cans of various animal species;
Determine type and amount of feed animals receive including any special feed requirements, supplements, etc.;
Transport or assist in transporting, loading, or unloading cages, animals, supplies, as needed for the care of laboratory animals or conduct of research;
Assist in treating minor husbandry problems such as ear mites, overgrown or mal-occluded teeth, overgrown claws, etc.;
Assess air exchanges and advises of potential problems with room temperature, humidity, light cycles, or air exchanges;
Maintains accurate animal inventory sheets;
Identifies laboratory animals by ear tags, ear notches, or tattoos;
Restrain and handle commonly used animal laboratory species;
Determine which animals can be placed together and which ones must be separated (including weaning of newborn rodent pups, separation of males or males from females to prevent fighting, unwanted breeding or competition for feed and territory);
Oversee breeding or reproduction of animals according to their physical traits or to produce given numbers of animals; and
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, 6:00am to 2:30pm - Weekend and holiday coverage required.

Qualifications
Physical Demands & Work Environment: The position often requires lifting and carrying feed materials weighing up to 75 pounds and frequently handling items such as feed trays weighing up to 20 pounds. It also requires walking or standing for extended period and frequently working in a bent position. Light physical effort required to lift or handle docile animals. May need to use greater strength or agility to capture and restrain stronger or more active animals.

Work is performed inside and outside. Inside work often exposes animal caretakers to unpleasant odors and noises. Outside work exposes animal caretakers to sun and occasionally bad weather. Animal caretakers usually work on concrete floors and may be exposed to bites, scratches, and animal wastes. Caretakers may also work on grass or soil. Work may require contact with unpredictable or ill-natured animals exposing worker to greater possibility of injury from bites, scratches, and kicks. Animal caretakers may be exposed to contagious diseases.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
