POSITION REPORTING: OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR, SHELTER SUPERVISOR AND DEPUTY DIRECTOR

SUMMARY:
This is a professional position working with juveniles between the ages of 10-18 in the Secure Detention and Shelter Divisions at the Youth Center. The art teacher must have a strong foundation in classroom management and behavior modification. This employee must be familiar with and have experience in a wide variety of concepts, activities and techniques related to teaching art on a secondary level. Especially important is the ability to work with dependent and delinquent youths in a non-traditional school setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Responsible for the quality of education administered to students.
Organizes, plans and develops daily instruction and courses related to the art field.
Monitors daily behavior and classroom activities of students.
Provides diversified student assignments and programs according to the individual’s capabilities.
Maintains high level of accountability for art tools as expected in a secure facility.
Uses consistent and fair disciplinary techniques when required.
Promotes role modeling through good teaching application and maintaining a high level of acceptable educational standards.
Coordinates and interacts with other teachers regarding scheduling, managing difficult students, educational field trips and attending regular educational meetings.
Communicates effectively with counseling, supervisory and administrative staff in conjunction with changes, problems and administration of daily activities.
Reports directly to the Operations Supervisor, Shelter Supervisor and Deputy Director.
Perform related work as required.

Pennsylvania Teacher’s Certificate in Art/preferred dual certification in Special Education
Strong foundation in classroom management and behavior modification.
Familiarity and experience with a variety of concepts, activities and techniques related to teaching art on a secondary level.
An acute awareness of security issues related to teaching art in a detention environment.
Must have good writing and record-keeping skills.
Follows Youth Center Policies on a consistent basis.
Ability to recognize or foresee escalating problems before getting out-of-control.
Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with public and other employees.
Must have good moral and ethical character.
Must have a PA Criminal History Record check, a drug test, Child Abuse History clearance and FBI fingerprint clearance prior to employment.
Must have a physical examination report from a licensed physician.
Must have a valid PA Drivers License.
