Position Overview
The Post Doctoral Researchers (PDRs) will participate in planning, design, and execution of research projects in a broad set of activities across several scientific disciplines. They will perform complex experiments and perform research in an area of considerable scope and complexity, ranging from soft to hard materials, in which existing theory or methods may be limited or lacking. These positions will perform Science Technology Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) research, High Resolution Electron Energy Loss spectroscopy (EELS) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, dual beam Focused Ion Beam microscopy (FIB), Optical Microscopy, Electron/X-ray tomography. The PDRs will perform sample preparation, as well as collect, analyze, and interpret research data. In addition, these positions will assist in preparing progress and final research reports, and present data findings at scientific meetings.
Additional Information: The PDRs will spend majority (60-70%) of time working in research teams at WPAFB and the remaining time at CEMAS; therefore this position requires frequent travel between Dayton and Columbus, Ohio.

Department Information
The Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) is one of the largest concentrations of electron and ion beam analytical microscopy instruments in any North American institution. CEMAS brings together multidisciplinary expertise to drive synergy, amplify characterization capabilities, and challenge what is possible in analytical electron microscopy. CEMAS and the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL/RX) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH has initiated an exciting new venture establish a platform for long term research collaboration in electron microscopy. The objective is to catalyze innovation in materials research by driving the connection between the future “needs” of AFRL and the future “possibilities” as CEMAS pushes the boundaries of advanced electron microscopy.
We are seeking an outstanding post-doctoral researcher (PDR) who has extensive expertise in the development and application of electron microscopy for advanced materials characterization. The successful candidate will participate in the planning, design, and execution of research projects in a broad set of activities involving hard (e.g., metallic and oxides) materials of interest to AFRL/RX, in which existing theory or methods may be limited or lacking. The experimental effort involves use of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) research, High Resolution Electron Energy Loss spectroscopy (EELS) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, dual beam Focused Ion Beam microscopy (FIB), Optical Microscopy, Electron/X-ray tomography.

This position is located at both the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, Ohio and at the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) in Columbus, Ohio. The successful candidate would normally reside in Columbus, and travel frequently between Dayton and Columbus, Ohio. The successful candidate would report to the PI, Prof. Hamish Fraser, and co-PI, Prof. David McComb, both at CEMAS at OSU.

Required Qualifications

Required:
Doctoral Degree in materials science or relevant field of science or engineering; extensive experience in aberration corrected electron microscopy and associated techniques; ability to comply with export control regulations and handle confidential information and data; advanced knowledge and experience with electron microscopes; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work dynamically in a diverse team environment; ability to translate, adapt, and apply academic and/or practical knowledge. Please note that pursuant to a government contract, this specific position requires U.S. citizenship status.
