Duties & Responsibilities
The Mechanical Engineer will work in a team environment together with the Mechanical Discipline Director, Mechanical Platform Discipline Lead, Project Manager, Design Manager, Project, and other Engineers and Architects to assess, program, master plan and design projects involving either “Greenfield” construction or renovation/reuse. Projects in the in the Life Science Market Segment will primarily involve research, development, and manufacturing facilities for clients in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Projects in other M+W offices that the Mechanical Engineer may also support include those in the advanced technology and data center markets.
When performing duties as a Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will be integral at the Discipline Level in the preparation of Quality Reviews, and solving or facilitating the resolution of complex technical or design problems. You will work with other engineers and team members from other platforms to help develop designs, details, and specification standards, and mentor interns and junior staff regarding technical development. The Lead Mechanical Engineer in this position shall be experienced in calculation, design, selection, specification and construction of mechanical and plumbing systems for commercial and industrial building including HVAC, exhaust, process cooling water and process vacuum systems. Activities include load calculations, equipment selection, duct and pipe design, code review, and development of control sequences of operation. You will work with Mechanical personnel from the other M+W U.S., Inc. office locations to improve and develop tools and procedures related to training, Intern Development, project delivery, quality control and our SharePoint based global Knowledge Center.
Work closely with design and technical teams including the Project Engineers, Project Architects, and Project Specialists while supporting the development of design deliverables, such as Construction drawings, specifications, calculations, and cost estimates
Perform engineering tasks for the design of utilities and HVAC (wet/dry), Plumbing systems, and Fire Protection Systems for Pharma/Bio-Pharma Facilities, Advanced Technology Facilities, Cleanrooms, and Data Centers.
Apply industry standard practices relating to energy efficiency
Understand and apply applicable building codes and standards
Use and interpret results of Trane CDS software to define heating & cooling load calculations
Use and interpret results of PIPE-FLO fluid flow analysis software to design, optimize, and troubleshoot fluid piping systems
Use and interpret piping system stress analysis results using CAEPIPE software to determine weight, pressure, temperature, & earthquake impacts on system design
Develop system sequences of operation and P&ID’s
Develop familiarity by reading, understanding and applying departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and M+W policies and procedures
Prepare AutoCAD/Revit drawings
Interface with clients, attend client interviews, and assist in preparation of proposals
Mentor and develop junior engineers and designers
Other duties as assigned
Ability to travel as required for project execution, and to support M+W projects in other offices.
Familiar with Building, Mechanical, Fire, and Energy Codes
Experience with FDA/cGMP
Solid understanding of Psychrometrics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Heat Transfer and related applications
Trane CDS, PIPE-FLO, CAEPIPE, AutoCFD software experience a plus
Microsoft Office Suite
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
5-10 Years of experience in the design of mechanical/plumbing facilities systems
FE registration required
PE registration or the ability to obtain required
Experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical plant projects preferred
Excellent leadership, communication, and computer skills required
Excellent presentation skills and comfortable with public speaking
Knowledge of engineering standards, systems, and document control
Knowledge of Industry and Technology trends
Advanced ability to interpret engineering deliverable content
Understanding of other disciplines for coordination and colllaboration
Knowledge of construction & constructability practices & principles
Experience in control sequences of operation and developing system P&ID’s
LEED AP a plus
