Status: This is a Volunteer position.

*_, is seeking professional volunteers with no experience and/or gives verifiable a volunteer certification to serve growing social benefits base in the educational sectors in the New York City market.


The Onsite Volunteers Interpreter is responsible for traveling to client sites by appointment, and renders the meaning of conversations in the consecutive mode of interpretation between the target language and English speakers. The interpreter processes information quickly and concisely, recognizes sensitive cultural differences and is professional and courteous at all times. The interpreter uses appropriate terminology and understands common industry procedures and practices. Interpreting assignments may be technical or non-technical in the following fields: healthcare, government services and education.


Assignments will take place at the client locations in the New York Cityarea. The volunteer must provide their own reliable transportation.


The volunteer must:

  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to the conventions of established interpretation protocol
  • Provide clear and accurate renditions with no additions or omissions
  • Employ good service and clear enunciation, pronunciation, pleasant and professional voice as well as polite forms of expression
  • Follow instructions, manage the flow of the communication and avoid taking over the communication, as well as avoid interaction with the Limited English proficiency speaker without permission
  • Understand protocol and terminology in the healthcare & education industry
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the assignment at all times
  • Have access to the Internet or work related electronic communication
  • Provide clarification and cultural brokering using excellent judgment and skill
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment


  • No experience need
  • Fluency in English and target language and skilled in the associated cultural dynamics
  • Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional and accent differences to find ways of communicating with the limited English proficient patient
  • Excellent listening, retention and note-taking skills to maintain a high level of accuracy
  • Knowledge of industry-specific terminology, referencing glossaries and other materials
  • Ability to concentrate and to stay detached from the conversation, remaining neutral and objective at all times and following client's instructions closely
  • Ability to explain idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances to avoid miscommunication
  • Education in languages, translation, interpretation or related fields preferred, but not required.
