Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $19.23 to $23.07 per hour based on experience. This is a 20 hour per week position and does not receive any Town benefits.


The Town of Westerly is accepting applications for the position of Payroll Assistant. This position is responsible for performing a variety of administrative and technical work in payroll preparation and processing.

This position is under the general supervision of the Director of Human Resources.

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience in computerized payroll processing and ERP/HRIS systems. The ideal candidate will also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or related field.

The Opportunity

The Payroll Assistant works in the Department of Human Resources and is located at Westerly Town Hall. Current hours are typically 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM; however, flexibility is expected for this position, as this position’s workload changes based on operational demand. The individual in this non-exempt position will be expected to flex their work week in order to complete time sensitive projects. Some of the responsibilities are as follows:

  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements in payroll processing.
  • Reviews, analyzes and checks payroll forms and reports for accuracy and makes necessary adjustments or corrections.
  • Reviews payroll codes in the ERP system for accuracy and consistency and apprises management on differences.
  • Processes payroll workflow to ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely.
  • Updates payroll records by reviewing and approving changes in exemptions, insurance coverage, savings deductions, and job titles, and department transfer/update information.
  • Pays employees coordinating with departmental staff in the production and issuance of paychecks or electronic transfers.
  • Processes biweekly payroll and all payroll related transactions for the organization.
  • Prepares and W-4s, YTD earnings, 1095C, ACA compliance, etc.
  • Troubleshoots routine and entry level payroll issues and coordinates with senior staff responding to questions and issues.
  • Resolves routine payroll issues and communicates with and explains in-person or via phone/e-mail to affected individuals.
  • Utilizes crystal reports to extract data from the Town’s ERP and provide information as requested.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned in the areas of payroll.
