Argonne is seeking a transportation systems modeler to work on our high-performance, agent-based travel demand and transportation system simulation framework, Polaris, and improve its models of firm behavior, driver behavior and freight-related decision-making. Polaris has two components – passenger and freight – which are integrated in the same software. The software is used for performing detailed simulations of large scale transportation systems. The goal of such simulations is to analyze establishment and driver responses to potential future scenarios or trends in the economy, mobility, connectivity and autonomy (CACC/CAV), delivery modes, vehicle technologies, and so on in order to understand their potential impacts on transportation mobility and energy sustainability. Decision makers in the public sector and at private companies rely on such simulation models to inform decisions on investments and management strategies. The core algorithms of the freight model include agent-based models of discrete choices regarding trade partnerships, transport and logistics path choices, inventory-theoretic shipment size and frequency selection, and other decisions. The candidate will analyze various data sources to improve the models and support other analyses. The candidate will also enhance the simulation models and use them to analyze freight travel patterns and associated activities.

Develop models and software implementations of multi-modal freight transportation systems
Analyze data to support model development
Develop new methodologies for simulating traffic flow and regional transportation system operations and control
Frequently interact with software developers on implementing new algorithms and improving performance of existing algorithms
Participate in research teams to perform transportation system energy analysis using Polaris and vehicle energy simulation framework Autonomie, with in the context of changing trends
Work under minimal supervision
PhD Degree in transportation, operations research, mechanical or environmental engineering, economics, or a related field
Fluent in English
Knowledge of transportation system modeling
Knowledge of the activity-based or agent-based travel demand modeling
Knowledge of discrete choice or other decision process models
Experience in data collection, processing and analysis
Experience in the development of transportation models, using commercial or open source software
Experience with C++ for the Windows and/or Linux platform
Experience with statistical modeling software such as R, SAS, Stata, or SPSS
Good Verbal and written communication skills
