All new FBI Special Agents will earn salaries at the GL-10 [Special Base Rate for LEOs] pay grade. Applicants with no prior government service will earn a salary at the GL-10, step 1 pay level with a 25% Availability Pay bonus (mid-$75,000s), but have the opportunity to promote to the GS-15 level (mid-$150,000s). Applicants with prior government service (including FBI professional staff) may be eligible to receive higher steps that are commensurate with their highest previous pay.

Candidates must have:

(1) A completed Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Sociology, or a similar degree, AND

(2) One of the following two options:

  • At least 2 years (24 months) of full-time work experience obtained after completing a Bachelor's degree, OR
  • At least 2 years (24 months) of full-time, active duty military experience obtained before, after, or while completing a Bachelor's degree.

Candidates must also meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be 23 to 35 years old at time of application. By law, age waivers are only available for preference-eligible veterans and current federal law enforcement officers.
  • Meet the Special Agent physical fitness standards.
  • Have a valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Be willing to accept an assignment to any of the FBI's 56 domestic field offices upon the completion of training at the FBI Academy training (transfer costs to permanent duty station are paid).
