Shrub Oak International School is the new benchmark in autism education. We are a private day and boarding school in northern Westchester County, serving the needs of an international coed population of children, adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum. The Student Support Supervisor is a year round, non live-in position reporting to the Director of Campus Life. In collaboration with the Director, the Supervisor provides front line management and administrative support for daily operations, which includes leading a growing team to support our students’ needs (Direct Support professionals and 1:1s). The Supervisor is responsible for hiring, onboarding, developing and managing staff and students, assisting with emergency response procedures, and collaborating with all members of the Shrub Oak staff. As an educator, the Supervisor works closely with colleagues to create/maintain an inclusive community and foster specific skill development to meet the individualized needs of Shrub Oak’s student population. Having access to confidential information regarding Shrub Oak and its students, discretion and independent judgement is required. The Supervisor also actively assists with other programs, events, and services administered through the Campus Life Department, and has the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of Campus Life responsibilities.
Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position
Manage the day-to-day operations and programs of the residence halls (both on and off campus) to support our boarding students, including the scheduling of staff to ensure appropriate coverage
Manage and lead a growing team of DSPs and 1:1s during the Campus Life hours, with the goal of developing staff generally, and individually based upon their developmental needs. This includes hiring, onboarding, developing, and handling performance concerns as needed with the Director and Head of Human Resources
Serve as a liaison between staff and other key offices pertinent to the day-to-day operations
Manage and have the ability to handle challenging student behaviors with respect and the goal, wherever possible, to teach alternative productive behaviors
Develop and maintain trusting relationships with students, including understanding his/her unique interests, needs and goals, as well as the student body generally, to maintain a positive and cooperative environment
Support the enforcement of all policies and procedures relative to staff and students ensuring an inclusive and respectful community, all to promote self-advocacy, collaboration, and independence
Complete administrative tasks, including but not limited to, assisting with move-in/move-out of students, orientation, maintenance requests, incident reports, and progress tracking
Attend to and report all emergencies and/or other situations requiring immediate attention in a timely manner to the appropriate staff member(s) in accordance with Shrub Oak policies/procedures
Facilitate programming and community development based on the needs of each student outlined by the faculty, clinicians and/or Campus Life model
Advise, support and mentor students on various life issues collaborating with faculty and clinicians as necessary and follow up with all issues regularly
Support the ITEP and other developmental goals for each student, collaborating with the ITEP team including documenting efforts and progress
Serve as a campus and community resource for students and staff by advising and providing guidance in planning programs, activities, academic support
Develop, present, track, and evaluate educational and campus life programs for students
Attend all staff meetings and seminars as scheduled, including all staff orientation/training
Support other department responsibilities as needed and determined
Required Skills – Competencies – Qualifications
Experience working with adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum and/or students with developmental disabilities
Experience working with students displaying challenging and/or maladaptive behaviors
Passionate about working with and mentoring students (adolescents and young adults) within area of responsibilities, all to empower his/her self-determination, self-advocacy and development
Experience managing, hiring, onboarding, developing and engaging staff, with a view toward developing his/her capabilities
Experience with collaborating with members of the department and a cross disciplinary team to achieve desired goals.
Ability to manage schedules to ensure appropriate student coverage
Knowledge of administrative operations, processes, techniques and procedures
Excellent organizational, communication and group facilitation skills
Excellent computer skills, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.)
Ability to deal effectively, professionally and courteously with internal and external contacts, including all Shrub Oak staff, parents, and community constituents
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions
Ability to work flexible hours is required
Education and Experience
3-5 years’ minimum of relevant professional experience required in special education, behavioral management, law enforcement or military
Previous experience working in special education, behavioral intervention required
3-5 years of demonstrated experience managing, leading and engaging a large and growing team, with the ability to uphold and enforce Shrub Oak procedures and policies
Ability to speak multiple languages is a plus
Valid drivers license and good driving record, a plus
The work will generally be performed in and around the campus both indoors and outdoors, as well as off-campus during community activities.
Physical demands are in excess of sitting, and require walking or standing to a significant degree. The Campus Life Supervisor is required to move throughout the campus on a routine basis and execute program operations. Daily desk work including extensive amounts of computer and phone time as well as the ability to navigate stairs, mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement, bending and squatting, lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds, and the ability to rearrange furniture for events is occasionally required. Ability to move quickly and freely around the campus, and on a moment’s notice, to ensure the safety of our students in unexpected or challenging situations.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Full time and part time positions may be available. Full time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week. The ability to work over the traditional hours may be needed to support the needs of the program.
