Job Summary and Scope:
The Creative Designer 2 will create and develop innovative packaging solutions for a variety of clients. Under general direction, the CD 2 will collaborate with sales and clients to provide creative design solutions that meet and exceed customers’ expectations. The Creative Designer 2 will be tasked with generating multiple design concepts for projects using sketching and 3d modeling tools to best yield best quality visualization of these concepts for comprehension by the client. The Creative Designer 2 will either work alone or be paired with a more senior designer depending on project complexity. The CD2 will prepare and present packaging solution proposals that can meet those needs and be integrated and implemented with the customer’s systems and equipment to ensure a complete plan is feasible within cost, time and environment constraints. This position enforces structural specifications and integrity of packaging components in accordance with Veritiv Design for Manufacturing guidelines. The CD 2 will lead simple to moderately complex projects or support other CD 2s on their projects as needed.
Able to use appropriate skills, sketching, 3D modeling, rendering, animation and video, to define and communicate project concepts
Utilize current graphic design technology and computer software to develop, and edit, graphic layouts to meet customer needs. Prepares files for optimum alignment through quoting and sourcing.
Create appropriate visual design languages by understanding the meaning and effect of these on the audience, market and culture.
Ability to analyze market and design trends and apply through design thinking.
Create broad scenarios/ themes/ concepts that explore potential or articulate an innovative proposition.
Communicate ideas clearly and persuasively at an individual and group level, often using story-telling to bring an opportunity to life.
Create and manage documentation of Industrial Design specifications (2D and 3D data, at appropriate checkpoints.
Ensure a high-quality Design output, respecting business requirements, brand values and design excellence.
Intermediate understanding of manufacturing processes.
Intermediate knowledge of packaging design, converting and manufacturing.
Work with automated equipment, and packaging manufacturers to ensure the creation of designs that do not exceed manufacturing limitations.
Provides technical sales support to ensure successful customer integration and implementation of established packaging products.
Coordinate, manage and maintain all creative project information (i.e. revision level, changes, product line, project design costs, etc.) with the company's project management tools to ensure accurate project progress reporting.
Qualifications / Knowledge & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field such as Packaging Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, or Product Design. Advanced degree is a plus.
3-6 years demonstrated experience with product and/or packaging design.
Intermediate understanding of 3D cad such as SolidWorks, Rhino, 3d Studio Max, or other comparable software packages.
Intermediate ESKO ArtiosCAD 2D & 3D
Intermediate knowledge of computer rendering tools.
Ability to prepare specification plans of design work to translate to sourcing and/or manufacturing teams.
Basic understanding of package solution qualification related standards (ISTA, ASTM, etc).
Intermediate knowledge of graphic design software: adobe creative cloud suite
Intermediate understanding of Microsoft product suite.
Ability to visualize concepts and turn concepts into 3D renderings, graphic layouts and physical mock-ups.
Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to present issues, plans and objectives.
Balance the relationship between product properties, design elements, business goals, marketing directions, consumer trends, technology and environmental issues.
The ability to think creatively and freely look into the future.
Ability to adapt to changing demands; ability to perform well under pressure.
Excellent organizational skills combined with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent quality hand-sketching ability to demonstrate multiple concepts in a relatively quick turnaround time.
Ability to generate physical conceptual mockups using simple and effective materials such as: foam core, eps foam, paper, etc…
Acts as mentor and lead designer to other CD 2s.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirement:
Typical temperature controlled office environment.
Limited travel may be necessary.
Developing and presenting concept designs to internal/external customers.
Requesting prototype tooling/samples to complete design evaluation and validation.
Completing packaging design solutions.
Defining material specifications.
Making necessary updates/changes based on customers’ feedbacks.
Supporting sales/PM to solve packaging related design issues.
