Program Description:

For the foreseeable future, building development and construction in San Francisco will continue to provide quality career opportunities for residents of the Bay Area. For certain trade unions, e.g., plumbing, sheet metal, carpentry, and electrical, successfully passing and scoring high on the entrance exam is critical to a) receiving an application to join the said union and, b) ones position on the rank/placement list for dispatch.

For residents of San Francisco’s District 10, YCD is offering a “Trade Union Pre-Apprentice /Entrance Exam Preparation Class” to prepare residents to take and successfully pass trade union entrance exams. This class will be “thorough immersion” experience focused on math skills development and reading comprehension over 10 to 12 week period.

Course Curriculum:

The Math Instructor will be using the “Pre-Apprentice Training: A Test Preparation Manual for Skilled Trades” as the core curriculum and teaching aid.

  • Developing test-specific math skills from whole numbers through algebra and geometry
  • Learning how to read a ruler using English and metric units
  • Sharpening skills required to score well on mechanical and spatial aptitude tests
  • Visualizing objects in 3-dimensions using three view drawings
  • Learning technical reading, interviewing and test-taking skills

In addition, a “Pre-Apprentice Training: Math Supplement” will be used as an additional teaching aid, the focus of which is:

  • Whole Numbers
  • Fractions and Decimals
  • Percentages
  • Story Problems Algebra
  • Polynomials
  • Graphing Equations
  • Geometry

Responsibilities Include:

  • Successfully delivering the math curriculum as described above.
  • Motivating program participants to produce their best work.
  • Baseline each student's skill set at the start of the program, retesting at the end of the program and demonstrating improvement in skills learned by all participants.
  • Monitor each student’s individual progress throughout the duration of the program, identifying and addressing challenging subject matter.
  • Immediately informing the YCD Program Director and Case Manager of any opportunities, issues, concerns, and/or challenges that may arise during the facilitation of the 11 week Math Academy.
  • Being present and teaching the Math Academy Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.


  • B.S. degree in Mathematics or related field of study.
  • In lieu of a degree, three (3) years experience successfully teaching mathematics to include algebra and geometry.

Compensation (Contractor Position):

  • Salary range between $40.00-$50.00 per hour (DOE)
