The Systems Administrator is responsible for overseeing peak operation, performance, availability and security of Adler University information systems and telecommunications network infrastructures. This position is responsible for management, optimization, security, and documentation oversight for the University physical/virtualized server infrastructure, infrastructure hardware, switching systems, wired/wireless systems, hybrid cloud email system, web services, network directory, routing/security systems, and business continuity systems for the University’s Chicago/Online/ Vancouver campuses (via collaborative effort with local staff/consulting resources in Vancouver). This position also manages Adler’s cloud-based systems, including Office 365, Azure, AWS.
Ensure optimum network performance by performing regular network server configuration administration, operating system/application installation and updates, optimization, monitoring, log file review, etc.
Build/manage aggressive systems security operations across technology environment, including malware protection systems, security patch/definitions updates, intrusion detection and prevention, vulnerability testing/mitigation, access control management/auditing, firewall/VPN management, anti-virus / anti-spam system management, log review, etc.
Develop and perform maintenance/optimization tasks at infrastructure, server, and applications levels (i.e., VMWare, network, switching, Office 365, Sharepoint, SQL, etc.)
Security certificate management, including installation, renewal, re-keying, etc.
Ensure optimum maintenance/operation of virtualized infrastructure, Storage Area Network (SAN), and physical systems resources via performance monitoring, software/firmware updates, testing, reporting, etc.
Ensure optimum functionality and performance over internal / Office 365 email systems, including performance monitoring, updates, scheduled maintenance, access control, integrity testing, malware protection, etc.
Maintain optimal patching and operation of wired and wireless switching network, network routing, intra-campus MPLS / partner organization VPN connectivity, Internet access, etc. Ensure peak operating performance, access/security compliance, and access coverage across Adler campuses
Assist in management of Adler Active Directory / Azure directory integration to ensure compliance with account enable / disable / access control policies, etc.
Ensure peak functionality/performance of applications systems and web services including access, performance tuning/load balancing, fault tolerance, security, upgrades/patch management, etc. This includes, but is not limited to, Exchange/Office 365, Sharepoint, Ellucian Colleague, Onbase document management, Active Directory, Azure, Microsoft IIS, SQL, Canon Uniflow print systems, server environment, Cayosoft, etc.
Full oversight of business continuity operations at both Chicago and Vancouver campuses, including:
Backup processes for all Adler technology resources
Management of physical and virtual environment backup operations
Scheduled backup of wired/wireless systems, phone systems, and other systems/appliances where backup operations are in place
Onsite/Cloud-based backup process management
Periodic file restore across critical systems to validate backup media integrity
Disaster recovery process testing/documentation
Offsite data repository management and backup job optimization
Work with external support specialists/vendor support resources to identify and resolve access control, performance, availability issues as they relate to network, directory, or access control as necessary.
Build and maintain documentation pertaining to infrastructure, wiring maps, change management, access control, processes and procedures
Work with AVP, Technology and Technology team to maintain relevant and accurate documentation over infrastructure documentation, process documentation, change management, access control, etc.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (periodically move IT equipment)
This position work schedule will include occasional weekend / early/late shift hours as required
Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field
Network+ / MCSE / other professional certifications preferred
5+ years’ experience in VMWare virtualized network environment – demonstrable experience managing physical host / SAN-based alongside physical server systems
Demonstrable experience with host-routing-SAN installations including iSCSI, 10GB copper, fiber, etc. connection technologies
5+ years’ experience advanced management/optimization/process automation in Windows Server domain-based environment.
5+ years progressive experience managing Exchange / Office 365 hybrid environments.
5+ years progressive experience building/managing/troubleshooting network hardware / software / connectivity troubleshooting techniques
5+ years of progressive experience with network security, anti-spam / anti-malware systems, intrusion prevention/detection, wired/wireless firewalling/access control. Experience with LDAP, Azure management/authentication, ADFS management preferred
3+ years’ experience supporting/managing Microsoft Sharepoint on-premise/Online environments.
3+ years in switching/routing, site-site MPLS, VPN, VLAN, DMZ configuration/testing/troubleshooting, firewall configuration/access control rules management.
Demonstrated mastery of network topology/configuration components, including DNS, DHCP, VLAN, NAT, QoS, etc.
Demonstrated experience with monitoring/testing/recovery tools (Wireshark, sniffers, etc.). Juniper experience required / Dell Sonicwall environment experience preferred
3+ years’ experience preferred managing/troubleshooting/supporting Microsoft IIS / Microsoft SQL installations
Demonstrated experience with SSL certificate management across Windows, Exchange, database systems
Demonstrated experience implementing and managing performance management/notification systems for systems and environmental variables (electric, temperature control)
VOIP phone system management experience (Mitel systems preferred)
Demonstrated documentation development / management experience
Strong team/customer service focus
Strong communications / interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently / organized and detail-oriented
Ability to work off-shift hours (early/late/weekends, etc.)
