Mount Rogers Health District seeks a full-time classified Environmental Health Specialist Senior based in the Washington County Health Department located at: 15068 Lee Highway Bristol, VA 24202 Performs environmental health duties independently at the journey level in areas such as food sanitation, on-site soils evaluation, private well inspection, rabies abatement, communicable disease investigation, migrant labor camp inspection, classification of shellfish growing areas and investigation of general environmental complaints. Training includes completion of the VDH Soils program, VDH Food program or VDH Shellfish program, whichever is applicable. The position will have working knowledge of principles and practices of environmental and public health such as food sanitation, onsite sewage disposal systems, private well development and construction, biology, microbiology, and chemistry. The person will need to analyze data and make appropriate recommendations by applying regulations and procedures, to use field data to formulate sewage design plans and specifications and to conduct inspections and investigations in all areas of environmental health. This position will work outdoors and performs moderately strenuous physical labor during all seasons of the year and use equipment such as soil auger and Munsel soil chart with accuracy with knowledge of soil descriptions and methodologies. Knowledge of principles & practices of environmental health. Must have the ability to interpret and apply complex environmental regulations. Must provide for own transportation, and a valid driver's license is required. Those possessing credentials of verifying completion of training in environmental health program of food, sewage, water may be considered for qualification as an EH Specialist Senior. Skills in using a computer (Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and Outlook) are required. The ability to receive, understand and perform tasks as instructed by supervisor and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as hiking, lifting, bending and working in outdoor climates are required, and to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Prefer a Bachelor of Science or higher degree in Environmental Health or related field or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Current work with VDH as an Environmental Health Specialist or working as environmental health specialist with another Virginia agency or in another state. Prefer have and maintain credentials in one of the following: VDH Standardized in Food, DPOR Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE), DPOR Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator (AOSE), National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) State Standardized Inspector.
