GW’S Center for Translational Medicine, Department of Surgery, conducts innovative, fundamental basic science research as well translational oncology research. Our clinical and research interests have been to develop effective therapeutics targeting liver and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers with a focus on the TGF-? signaling pathway and its target genes in tumorigenesis. We identify and validate tissue and blood-based combinatorial biomarker panels, derived from functional pathway-specific studies, to improve the early detection of liver and GI cancer as well as stratify populations according to their risk for developing cancers. Over the past ten years, we have developed integrated approaches—combining bioinformatics analysis with in vivo mouse models, and in vitro biological and biochemical methods—to identify and validate the relevance of TGF-?-Smad3 signaling in liver and GI cancer.
The Center for Translational research is searching for a full-time Research Scientist. This position is responsible for planning, conducting and supervising research at a high level, by designing and conducting experiments on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of gastrointestinal cancers and the role of TGF-sigma signaling in alcohol induced liver and GI cell proliferation. The individual will design experimental plans and procedures on numerous complex projects including lab, translational and clinical studies, and lead and direct the work of lower level staff in conducting the research. The individual will maintain an animal breeding colony of various knock-out and transgenic mice and genotypes, conduct procedures in cell culture, mitochondrial assay, RNA, histochemistry, confocal microscopy and other procedures. The individual will analyze results and submit for journal publication, grants, and conference presentations.
|Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Qualified candidates will hold a master’s degree/PhD and at least 5 years of experience in a related discipline, to include at least 2 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in biomedical or related field, 5 or more years of research experience in cancer biology and translational oncology, publications in peer-reviewed journals. Expertise in molecular/cell biology and microscopy methods such as cloning, q-PCR, fluorescent microscopy, Immunoprecipitation, confocal microscopy, cell based assays, EMSA, ELISA, transgenic mouse models, Western-Blot, animal work, tissue culture, and primary cultures. Strong writing, verbal and analytical skills are preferred.
