Your Opportunity

Schwab’s Corporate Reputation team is responsible for our firm-wide efforts to shape and protect the firm’s reputation and designing strategies to engage key corporate partners. This includes oversight of four critical areas: Crisis and Issues Management; Corporate Media Relations; Public Affairs; and Corporate Citizenship/ESG communications. The team plays a central role in building and preserving a high level of trust in the organization through management of critical issues and crises, as well as proactive corporate storytelling.

What you are good at

Reporting to the Managing Director of Corporate Reputation, you will help the company build and preserve a high level of trust in the organization by helping develop and implement corporate communications, with a focus on issues and reputation management. Specific areas of responsibility will include:

Issues Management: Help the firm prepare for and respond effectively to issues and crises, including:

Develop real-time assessments and points of view on when and how to respond to an emerging issue or crisis.

Create and deploy strategic and effective communications that deliver the company’s positioning on an initiative or issue, in a manner that represents the company in the most appropriate and significant way for the target audience.

Cascade the company’s response, talking points or statements across relevant teams to present a cohesive perspective across the organization.

Media and Public Relations: Support proactive and reactive PR and communications programs and campaigns around company issues and priorities, including:

Design and implement communications strategy and support for corporate issues, in partnership with the Legal, Government Affairs, Risk and Investor Relations teams.

Ensure that all communications reflect the Schwab’s core values.

Help handle media relations related to financial reporting, business performance and other corporate activities and narratives, including sponsorships and local media.

Participate in a center of excellence on media relations, leading the alignment of efforts related to issues management and mitigation and establishing relationships with peers, business partners and other collaborators to help drive outstanding communications for Schwab.

Rapid Response Protocols and Messaging: Manage Schwab’s PR Rapid Response Process, including:

Anticipate reputational issues and develop plans to lead future issues or crises.

Support the development and execution of crisis trainings and drills.

Counsel internal business leaders on communications implications of issues and the impact they could have on the company.

Identify and escalate issues as needed.

Monitoring and Reporting: Monitor Schwab communications to ensure their effectiveness and alignment with Corporate Communications goals, report on media coverage, and supervise competitor news.

Maintain detailed knowledge of developments in the business, including projects impacting the enterprise, corporate initiatives, acquisitions, and issues impacting our reputation.

What you have

At least 10 years of communications experience managing issues and crisis communication responses in an agency or in-house role
Financial services industry experience highly preferred.
An understanding of the factors that impact/influence corporate reputation, as well as the constantly evolving nature of threats to the reputation of brands.
Ability to perform in high pressure situations, which includes demonstrating sound judgment, and provide confident, proactive counsel to leadership and other internal team members.
Must be comfortable navigating confidential, critical information and advising tactical implementation of plans across teams.
Appropriately assess related risk and benefit for each media opportunity and recommend actions.
Willingness to be on the frontlines of reputational opportunities and challenges in a fast-paced environment.
Skilled in running traditional and social media through issues management.
Stay abreast of opportunities and challenges impacting the company’s focus markets.
A motivated, collaborative and highly reciprocal working style, optimally establishing trust and respect.
Ability to capitalize on the collective experience and expertise of colleagues to achieve desired outcomes.
Ability to learn quickly and develop knowledge of the organization, business, industry and marketplace.
