Position Summary:
HARMAN International is seeking a high performing analyst/manager to support HARMAN’s Global Legal team. The Sr. Legal Financial Analyst will be tasked to organize data, build spreadsheets & financial reports, perform financial analysis and projections, reconcile variances, and resolve related issues. S/he will assist in refining the budget submission process and in developing more effective reporting and improved processes used to monitor budgets. S/he will also identify ways to optimize HARMAN’s use of its legal e-billing tool/process to maximize outside counsel spend efficiency. The ideal candidate will be well balanced qualitatively and quantitatively with the ability to elevate important items while simultaneously understanding the underlying details and key drivers/variances. The role will report to the Senior Director of Legal Operations.

Job Responsibilities:
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Produce timely month-end reports of actual vs. budget results, ensuring accuracy and completeness; investigate, analyze and explain variances from budget for internal and external expense line items, and advise legal and finance staff on trends, opportunities for improvement, and issues of concern.
Work with legal management and finance staff to lead in the development of department annual budget submissions.
Serve as the legal department’s lead financial leader within the organization to ensure coordination of financial management efforts and timely resolution of issues with other company divisions.
Manage and monitor internal cross-charging / chargebacks from other departments; ensure proper coding of expense items and allocations.
Educate staff on budgetary, operational, and financial policies & processes.
Develop departmental dashboards and key performance metrics.
Organize data and create clear and accurate presentations, including spreadsheets, graphics, and insightful summary material.
Work on special projects as assigned.

LEGAL E-BILLING ADMINISTRATION / VENDOR MANAGEMENT

Lead and assist with the system administration of HARMAN’s legal e-billing tool, currently Legal Tracker (formerly Serengeti).
Assist with the management of outside counsel, including the enforcement of billing policies, vendor onboarding process, resolving inquiries from law firms and other legal services vendors.
Oversight of HARMAN’s external legal bill review process and quarterly accrual process.
Develop an expertise of Legal Tracker’s database reporting capabilities, including an understanding of what metrics can be developed that reflect HARMAN’s legal spending;
Analyze key billing and matter data sets to perform comparative analytics and trends across divisions, and recommend process improvements to ensure efficiencies.
Design and manage month-end spend reports and vendor activity (vendor location/expertise; spend; matter management).
Coordinate with internal finance and accounting teams to address payment issues; work with general accounting for SOX and internal audit requests.
Manage legal services vendors’ request for proposal (RFP) development and execution, including historical-spend analysis for alternative fee arrangement (AFA) negotiations.
Provide support to the HARMAN Legal Rate Review Committee, including management of HARMAN’s annual hourly rate review process; including analysis and presentation of firm rate proposals and communicating decisions to firms.
Maintain and update task-based timekeeper models for intellectual property and rates.
Analyze escalated invoice rejections and/or deductions, resolve issues, coordinate and process revisions or adjustments.
Ad-hoc projects and general operations support as required.

Basic Qualifications:
2-5 years of experience in Finance or Business Management
Bachelor’s degree in related field; preferred degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting.
Proven knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting: the ability to perform complex financial analysis and to create insight from a large-scale general ledger.
Accounting/bookkeeping experience; solid understanding of GAAP and IAS/IFRS principles.
Experience in matter management/electronic billing systems and analysis tools; e.g., Thomson Reuters’ Legal Tracker (f/k/a Serengeti) and HBR Counsel Command.
Advanced proficiency with MS Excel (V-lookup, pivot tables, charts, formatting, and formulas), MS Word and MS Outlook.
Experience writing and delivering webinar-based training and standard operating process guides preferred.
Experience with reporting/dashboarding, data mining & analytical software tools (e.g. Business Objects, Cognos, QlikView, Spotfire, Tableau).
Legal services (outside counsel) procurement and/or matter pricing/forecasting experience; corporate legal department experience preferred.
